Pending W.R. Dog Snapper

  • It's only a pound or so heavier than the current record... Just goes to show what difference a picture can make in appearance...

  • So what happens when you have a pending world record fish? Can you eat it? Do you need to freeze it till someone comes and takes a look at it? What happens if you don't have an approved scale to weight it? A record is a great accomplishment but I would eat that thing in record time if filing for a record was a hassle. Just curious how one goes about that without wasting the fish? No disrespect intended, I'm just curious. :)

  • Simple paperwork, and a pic of the fish on a certified scale is pretty much all it takes... But then again, I've never shot anything World Record worthy, so it's not like I have experience with it... If I'm wrong, someone please correct me...

I woud recommend freezing it until it's cleared as a record.

About two years ago Daryl Wong shot a potential world record white ulua in Hawaii. He took a couple pictures then sold the fish....to someone who ate it.
Then, the question came up that maybe the fish was a hybrid. They needed some tissue to test the DNA, which by now had been digested by some happy Hawaiian.
So the fish was never certified as a record but actually might have been.

  • I just gut them and hope my certified weight is great enough. I give a fish no more then 2 hrs before it gets
it's guts fed back to the sea.

  • where it was taken?? nice fish

I haven't heard confirmation on this, but I'm fairly sure it was taken around Asencion Island in the middle of the Atlantic half way between Africa & South America...

  • The requirements for IUSA records can be found at: IUSA World Record Application
There is a good bit more than just a few pictures required to submit your catch for a record. Also while the IUSA is very accommodating and more than fair in reviewing and accepting your application do not sit on your application too long. If you have a record complete and submit your application ASAP. EMIL
