• Skippering a clients boat offshore at O-dark thirty, I asked if I could bring a gun and hop in when he's done.
He said my big gun (Double Trouble) made his friend nervous the last time and preferred I not bring a camera, cell or my blue water gun.:( I going to bring the airbalete with reel anyway and when my lunch time comes jump in .....F....- it. If I don't check in tomorrow night I'm swimming home and will be back late.;)

Guess I need to hit the sack soon if I want 6hr sleep, later ..

    Cheers, Don

  • Hahaha good luck and be safe brother. Sounds like he's taking you to some secret spots

    Thanks buddy.
There are no secret spots I don't know about 60 miles out,( my base station has big ears) the guys just a control freak, I'll put him on fish but I want to get in when he heads to the cabin. It would be like going to a strip club as a body guard and not getting a table dance.

  • I'll update tomorrow but my friends caught 3 DoDos and one rat Yellowtail before I jumped in on some bird action.
Found a small scared bait ball with 3 tuna working them at 40', the fish were 26 to 35lbs app. I shot the smallest fish
because the largest one was over 15 feet off the tip of the airbalete and moving fast. I pointed the gun just in front of the small fish's nose and hit her behind the eye. The other two came back in very close to see what was bleeding. If I would have had Double Trouble I might have got 2 fish.

When I got back to the boat the guys were pumped up to fish the spot for the little rockets but no luck for them except another rat YT.

Sorry I know TTIWWOP .... next time it will be on my terms and I'll get GoPro and stills but at least I got wet
and the fresh Sushi is killer.:D

  • Oh man..... Now I get the title "Bummer"
    Congrats on that Tuna!!!

    Thanks mate.
Don't get me wrong, the little fart gun is fun, but drifting around in bait and jumping birds can have surprises with no one watching your 6. My bluewater gun can discharge a PPD if shite hits the fan, no way the airbalete's
7mm tooth pick would change the mind of a pissed off Mako or her big cousin. I'm used to being patient and taking the larger fish in a school when the timing is right. Long range (20') punch is a feature I like.
Very large pelagic fish can be taken with 1 band and a skinny shaft if the fish are thick and friendly....I didn't have time for that on this trip, plus the freezer is looking a wee bit thin this year, but things will change soon.

The water was a amazing blue out on the bank, fish boats were thick as cars in a car park. (more then 10).
I made sure I was 500 yards outside the main pile-up when I got wet.

  • Thanks guys, it is so good to have tuna back in my system, and the chick is now a lot happier:yaydance:. She's seen a bunch of pictures of me 4 years ago when I was taking nice fish on my boat but has just been getting Bla Bla Bla ....''I used to'' eat fresh fish 3 times a week and BBQ for 8 of my friends a few times a week.
I have bought Sashimi for us at my local Sushi bar more then I have put food on the table the last few years.:rolleyes1: Not having a real boat any more has really taught me to be humble, but this fall my gear will never be dry once again.;) Your are what you eat.:toast::toast:

  • That looks phenomenal. I think rat yellowtail means small, like we say chicken dolphin/ peanut on the east coast.

  • The guys are on it, it's a YT under 15 lbs in my book. If I'm looking for Tuna I leave the school fish alone, they have a habit of showing up right after your shaft is being flown around by a junior sized YT.
