This Thread is to share your 2012 CA Lobster opener stories. And if anyone is looking for a dive buddy Friday night, give me a call. I'll be shore diving Orange County and might need another buddy in the party. Its gonna be a good time.

I am terrified. I think that's why it is so enjoyable.
Saw a couple nice bugs 2 1/2 weeks ago out at night.... try to find them again! -
can you guys only lobster at night?

can you guys only lobster at night?
No, but it's fun doing rocky beach dives through the surf at night.;) If a guy gets real shallow and doesn't mind white water big bugs can be had anytime. I never go for big ones, not much of a trophy bug hunter, never kept one over 7 lb. I do like to eat the young ones if legal size.

I will be working Friday and Saturday. Have fun and be safe.

Thanks mate, same back at ya.

No, they can be seen in daylight. But it takes more looking. I am not much for getting body deep in a crack in the reef or a cave. I'd rather survive. Odds are better at night to find some in the open. No Tickle sticks in Cali!

I can count all my night dives on 1 one hand ... I HATE Night diving
I find it allot more fun to get them in the daytime

You mean this week...;)
I really like them most of the time ....at least till it gets real cold, well cold for me is 54 degrees.:@ not that ice water Anders dives in every day.;)

You guys may want to bring a longboard.

Too bad this has to be a super busy weekend at work.. Grr.
I think it might be better to surf anyways. Solid swell coming through. Stay safe guys. Big swells can make it even harder for all the boating yahoos to see you, keep an eye out for the dumbasses...

My opener report:
11:30 pm Newport Police writing tickets at little Corona for scuba divers going onto the beach.:(
11:45 pm Park at another spot and hike about a mile in full moon to an empty stretch of beach
12:01 am Two other divers seen in the water. very light boat traffic
12:20 We enter 4 foot surf getting beat up on entry. 18" viz, high surge.
1:30 leave the sea, not even seeing one lobster in nasty conditions. Arrrggh! -

Bummer about last night. Better luck next time.
-
The full moon made the hike super cool. The shore break, surge, and viz made things interesting. Wish we saw some lobster. We will get them next time.
Did anyone else get out besides me and dustan?

What kind of rigs do you guys bring to hold your lobsters in all the kelp here? In Hawaii my brothers friend made an amazing cage on top a body board with a trap door to keep the lobsters in but it would get tangled up in the kelp forests here.

Here ya go...Lobster Bag by Dan Silveira - YouTube

Thanks Don for the video. I have seen bags similar to the one Dan makes but I'm just nervous about it tangling in the kelp. Any words of wisdom on using these bags? Thanks.
