Lobster opener 2012

  • Thanks Don for the video. I have seen bags similar to the one Dan makes but I'm just nervous about it tangling in the kelp. Any words of wisdom on using these bags? Thanks.

I got one a Neptune auction a while ago but have yet to use it, my boy was using it for his mask and snorkel and it is MIA. I think a saw Davis D. with one last season.

  • I have the NHT. it's fine. you can wrap it up out of the way before it's loaded up. I swan through lots of kelp without issue. But be CAREFUL STILL!!! I keep my lobster gauge tied to it on a bungee so I can strength it out to gauge with.

I have this bag, it is a popular bag. The bag is made from a recreational fishing net, they say if it gets stuck you can tear it free. I'm not concerned with it tangle in the kelp but rather on the reef. If you go into caves or break walls it is a good idea to remove it from your body. Like dustan said you can wrap it up and stuff it under your weight belt until you get a lobster. Some people tie a knot in the net to make the bag smaller and use it for fish and other game.

  • Yup I use a NHT bag. Love it until this opener.

Sailed Friday afternoon in 15kts of wind and 5' swell. It calmed down substantially by the time we went out. Glassy smooth and very light with the full moon.

Went out on Ryan Lawler's boat with Wes Pierson out of Newps. Headed south and anchored at 12:05. Had my first legal by 12:15. First dive. Grabbed a few more just a hair short and got a really nice one about 1/2" over. Went to go hit the same reef on the next dive. Breathing up I see a lobster fly past me.. Apparently I lost weight since last year and my bag slid up, opening it ever so slightly. Out goes the bug that just went in.. After tightening the belt on the bag, I was able to grab a few more with only one more being legal before I got to the burping/swallowing stages of seasickness. Wes got four and Ryan got three.

It was my first time being seasick, no bueno. Could have been the few drinks I had sailing earlier in the day or the Cubans after sailing..

Today was pretty awesome. A friend of my boss was gifted a yellowtail, a dorado, and a hunk of yellowfin. I filleted it up and took a fair share for the effort. I'll be eating all that fall has to offer us CA boys tomorrow, can't wait..

Sorry guys, no pics from me.
