My buddy left me an AB Biller 32 Mahogany gun. It needs a new tip, has the notched shaft, a kind of weak looking line guide on the bottom of the handle that looks like it could get broken while banging around on the bottom.
Is it worth trying to fix up? I was thinking it might make a nice hole gun to keep on the boat. Thanks

Billers are solid guns. For a hole gun they are pretty good and I can name a dozen friends that learned to spear using the biller guns. The line release might be a weak point in the design but I havent heard many complaints and they are easy enough to replace if they do break.
They are definitely american style guns. A little chunky but they will work. If you got the gun free its probably worth the 30 bucks for a new tip to get it back in the water.

Why don't you sharpen the tip/get rid of the threading, and put a flopper on it. There are these great little shaft drilling jigs Speardiver Spear Shaft Drilling Jig

Do it. File the notches down and use spectra wishbones. Cut the but as short as possible. Good hole or tight wreck gun
-
What I dont' like is the shooting line strung below the gun. It goes from the bottom of the handle to the muzzle. It looks like it could tangle when tracking a fish while laying on the bottom. And if it tangles a bit, and you pull the trigger?
-
You shouldn't be doing that with this gun. Just stick it in the deep hole and head shot

If it's an open track you can put a pin on top of the shaft near the mech (another use for the drilling jig) and rig a shaft line release.

Ah, the ol' Heinrich maneuver

Side note:
Dan, what's behind the SS plate on the gun's side (in the mech area)? thanks. -
Nothing, I just had something engraved on the plate.

Hank I am a Biller man for 20 years, you wont get hung up on the bottom with the shooting line and I have been for some crazy rides with my ABbiller on big fish with no reel and can assure you the shooting line anchor will NOT give way.... Very solid guns no matter what you do with um even not washing the trigger mech for 5 years :@
Also i filed the edges of the notches and use Dynema wishbones with no worries, the shafts are so over sized and tough that they make the perfect hole gun.... You cant break the bloody things I assure you -

Ok, thanks
I was think that it would be something technical
