Annoying News

  • I went past the pool at my school today to ask about doing some freediving training, since Im stuck in Atlanta. The lady at the desk was completely confused and didnt seem to know what freediving was (not surprising) but after talking to the head lifeguard I find out ALL FREEDIVING IS PROHIBITED! :@ Apparently this is becoming more and more common. I asked him if there was anything I could do and he said about the only choice I had was to find a SCUBA instructor that would be willing to assume the liability and supervise.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

  • I usually just wait for the life guard to go home at Hotel pools. In the South Pacific, even in the day time no one ever said anything. I had a YMCA membership locally and used empty lane in the evenings, never a issue.
    Good luck.

  • Im mostly just doing laps underwater like you said.

The explanation I got was that recently there was someone at another pool nearby that was doing some type of training and blacked out. The lifeguard on duty assumed he was just holding his breath and the guy died. I understand the difficulty it presents for a lifeguard to monitor but if done with a partner it shouldnt be a problem. Im surprised they have gone as far as to ban it completely.

Im going to try to find some pools locally but I dont know of many that are indoor/heated in my area.

  • Do you think they would enforce the rule if you had a friend with you? Furthermore if you behave as Dan's video suggests im sure the lifegaurds would be confident that you'd have eachothers backs ;)

  • I asked about having a partner and they said that that didint matter unless the person was insured.

And there arent that many pools available since most are closed/closing for the winter.

  • If I were you I wouldn't tell them what you're doing, and as long as it's laps just do it. Be smart about it and don't black out. A factor that could be of importance is whether you use fins or not. Fins would draw unwanted attention and could get you thrown out. The question is whether swimming underwater using the breast stroke / frog kick style, is as beneficial training as doing it with fins. But the bigger question is whether pool training is at all beneficial for spearfishing. Personally I think not.

BTW what you posted here is not new to me, I heard it before. And what they told you about someone blacking out and dying in a pool nearby is probably BS. They probably pulled that information from the internet. It's their regular excuse.

PFI, FII etc. regularly hold courses in pools. I wonder what kind of "paperwork" they provide that means anything to pool management. Maybe proof of insurance is indeed all that's required.

  • I've heard a few scuba boats down here starting to require DAN insurance. That might be all that is required to satisfy the liability issue. Also, a PFI or FII cert might further convince them to grant you access if you posses either.

  • I agree w Dan. Don't tell them what you are doing and I'd but some cheap small fins just to maintain form.

The one thing pool training def does is keep you in the water and in swimming shape for when you are once again able to feel the ocean's sweet embrace

  • Totally agree with Don and Dan on this one, don´t let them know what ´re you doing in the pool. You are not freediving but swimming underneath the surface so to speak. Just find a partner to keep an eye while you are training.

As far as i know, most freedivers practice laps on pools and or static apnea. As far as i am concerned, best cross training for spearfishing is both gym workout and boxing drills holding your breath, since you are getting used to move your muscles close to an hipoxic condition, the result is better underwater performance.

    Good luck!
