Are these attacks on the rise?
One would need to look back at the Shark Research Committee data, I personally don't study it closely anymore as it has me thinking more than I want to about GWS, yes I have chosen to live in denial lately.
I have copious notes going back to 1981 but quit doing it 5 years ago. White Sharks are protected here as they are many other places around the globe. The seal population here in Cali is on the rise so they have plenty to eat. Spearfishing and surfing are also on a upward curve, when the two intersect we will have more occurrences of sightings and unfortunately attacks on swimmers, divers and in this case, surfers.
The second week in Oct is when I am much more careful about where I dive. This personal precaution is based on my sightings and notes.

Will they enter the kelp?

Will they enter the kelp?
Yes, when chasing a seal and feeding motivation is high, I have only seen one enter stringer kelp which had open areas.
They may do it on other occasions but I have no first hand knowledge.

May he rest in peace

Interesting advise Don. The smaller ones seem to be around So Cal most of the time but the big ones clearly move around on a "schedule." - of course, October is one of my favorite times to dive... ususally clear water (compared to other months locally), beach crowds are gone, and it's still warm.
Most recent previous CA Fatal attack was also at SURF beach near Lompoc in OCT 2010, - I think only a couple of days before the current attack.
Sign Below was posted well before current attack.

Wow. That sign is pretty intense. .... Except for the smiling cartoon shark
Still, good to post so people know
-
Doesn't look like the shark is smiling to me. That's a scary sign, I wouldn't go in that water.
-
Scary as it is. But a close friend is suffering from brain cancer, sometimes a shark attack seem as a more manly way to go. Surfers and spearos are a proud bunch. As Fuzz use to put it " We just pretend that they do not exist and keep doing what we love the most"
Take care out there

Yes, pretending is the best way to avoid assuming responsibility. We do take chances but they're based on at least knowing that a man eating shark is a remote possibility in the area we choose to dive. In that particular area it is no longer a "remote" possibility. I'll say this even though it sounds foolish given sharks are attracted to our speared fish, there is a remote possibility I'd spearfish in such an area, but zero possibility I'd be surfing. At least when spearfishing I'm on the offensive, can see what's around me, and given a little bit of reaction time can put the gun between me and the shark. Surfing I'd feel completely out of control and helpless.

I agree, rather its a reality or not I'd "feel" much more in control
-
Yep. When I do ocean swims for exercise the only difference is I am not looking for fish. Best believe I have a speargun with me. The metal tech 000 sees a lot of water but not a lot of fish.
-
Do you tuck the gun in your shorts?
-
No. I swim with a boogie board with a seven foot leash. Most of the time I hold it and kick like the kid swim lessons. When I feel like using my arms, rarely, I leash it to my waistband and tow it. Gun stays on top
