ATTN: Those with awesome man 'staches...

  • so...

I don't want to risk shaving the manliest part of a man above his waist ('stache) to make my mask not leak where its supposed to seal on the lip.

    Any tips or tricks?

Should i just trim off some hair where the mask seals :sad2: or I've heard of using petrol jelly, but don't wanna get teased for having a plop of clear, milky substance near my lips! lol

    Thanks!

  • Here's my experience and I have a fairly lively beard.

The longer your mustache is, the better! Contrary to thought but I have found it true. The hair actually gets saturated after a while and my mask doesn't leak all that terribly after that. I tried keeping my mustache short for a while and found it to leak more than when I had a longer stache. I am also used to just having a bit of water around my nose and will clear it whenever I am bothered from it.

You can shave a little bit below your nose, it often helps act as a little barrier so the mask can touch virgin skin. I did that for a while but I grew the beard in the first place because I despise shaving, so I threw that idea out the window. I no longer utilize the under-the-nose shave technique unless I'm going somewhere fancy and need to have a dapper, manicured beard. That happens maybe a handful of times a year when I'm out on a first date haha!

One other thing that works well for me. When I am on the surface I actually equalize my mask with air so that its puffing out slightly, just enough air volume that any more and it will escape. If I keep a constant positive pressure in the mask I never get a leak and think that is the best thing I have found.

I also am determined to keep trying on masks until I have one that fits my beard perfectly. So my advice, don't shave! Chicks like a manly beard anyways :oldman2:

  • thanks for the info. i bow to your beard. Unfortunately, i can't grow a beard in the Air Force, gotta keep the 'stache "high and tight"

  • Yeah, then if that is the case, I think keeping a tiny bit below your nose shaved is going to be your best bet.

Thank you for your service in the Air Force! I salute everyone who makes it their job to continue to keep our country safe :thumbsup2:

  • Trim it a 1/8'' under your nose, when you get around some dive squids, have them liberate some dry suit zipper wax to put on your stiff upper lip.;)

    :toast::toast: for your service mate.

  • You could try "Fat Jacks Tash Wax" , I use the mint scented daily and look quite dashing as a result. It may help with mask seal as well. I have no leakage issues with or without.

Edit; my previous comment regarding "Fat Jacks" effectiveness in preventing leakage was in error. Since I started using this product I am oozing manliness,,,,, or so my woman tells me.

  • finding the right masks can be key. My scuba mask never leaks no matter what. My omer zero leaks when i have a lil scruff all day but is best if i have the full beard and gets better as the day goes on. Leaks bad around the nose when i start but after half an hour into the dive seals nicely. Go to a dive shop test some masks see which ones dont leak with the stache and start from there. Diving with facial hair takes work but its worth it lol.

  • Unfortunately I can go without shaving for a month and still not have enough mustache to interfere.. However, I have dove with some extra manly men who swear by vaseline.. you gotta have thick skin with this approach though, some harsh jokes come your way when you bust out a can of vaseline on a boat full of dudes.

  • I would like to hear from hau about this! Lol. He has probably one of the baddest, most respect-inducing
mustaches I've ever seen, akin to Tom Selleck.
