Heres a better pic
The weight I heard was 69 lbs and there was a 5 pounder in its mouth. Still a stud fish.
very nice guys
Thats a monster mahi. I dont doubt the reported weight but its always tough to really gauge the size of them weightwise. I have a picture of me with a 30 pounder i shot in mexico and it doesnt look anything close to 30.
It doesn't look like a 70lb fish, but could be. Beautiful fish nonetheless.
For comparison this one was stated to be 37lb.
Amazing fish! What kind of gun is that? crazy big trigger
Nice fatty! Why would they not weigh it? I always have a small scale with me.
Dan you could be correct, but from what I've seen with certain pelagics once they reach a certain length they just get fatter and fatter. Virgili has a picture with a 70 pounder if you google it, seems once they reach about 5-6 feet in length they just get thicker. My uncle has a 13xx pound marlin on his wall and I can tell you its much longer than the couch it hangs above but its girth is what is surprising (insert gay jokes here)...
Ive seen a lot of mahi and some really big ones (50-60lbs+) over the years. Last tournament I was in was won by a 50lb er with a few 40 and 30 lbs in there. I think Mike is right at a certain point they get fat more then long. You can really tell the real fat ones by the thickness of the tail before it forks. Judging by that fish's tail it look like its really as big as they claim or close.
On second look hes kind of covering that portion so its hard to see how thick it truly is. Anyways like everyone else said. What a beauty, bet it was under some birds out deep.

Many times throughout the year dolphin have what people call "lockjaw". For whatever reasons maybe abundance of bait/moon/winds there are certain times where they are EVERYWHERE but wont eat anything you throw at them and wont feed at the surface. People often use down-riggers etc to get a bait down deeper on days like that. But having a spear on board and being able to jump over the side and shoot stuff that wont eat baits is common.
I ran into about 2 dozen schoolies with lockjaw a couple weeks ago. Wouldn't even take live bait, really wished I'd had my gun that day... Live and learn
