Trying something different this summer

  • I recently became curious about the idea of spearfishing the way guys did it in the 50's and 60s here in the US. I want to try it the way it was done then, like the pinders for example.

my plan is to pick up some old duckfoot fins, classic j snorkel, oldschool round mask, UDT swim trunks and jump in with my hawaiian sling and one of my old dive knives i have hanging on my wall. I think it would be pretty cool to try it at least, would make for some pretty cool pictures as well. Anyone interested in giving this a shot with me this summer?

  • Talking like slings and such. Basically just to get some sense of history and of how lucky we are to live now? If I could avoid any money it would be a fun experience

    i like to spear fish

  • Wow I am jealous of you boys. I am wishing for an opportunity to get in the water with all my modern gear, much less have a chance to mess around with all the old gear.

Having said that, I think you have a cool idea. I hope you all get together and make it happen. Imagine setting up a tournament based off of pre 1970 dive and spear gear. How cool would that be.

  • I wish we had legit clubs like that (neptunes, tritons, fathomiers) in Sofla

Florida used to have some of the oldest skindiving clubs, guess the hose guys took over.

    Cheers, Don

  • Minimal gear spearfishing is very cool. It's pretty much the way I started, speedos, no weight belt, 2 liter soda bottle for a buoy etc. But I did have a pneumatic speargun.

Keep in mind 30 - 40 years ago there wasn't as much competition/pressure as there is today. If you head out like this in Miami you're likely to come back empty handed, and possibly frustrated having seen one nice fish all day that you could've taken with a speargun. All other gear is negotiable, as we've all forgotten one thing or another in the past and had to make do with other than our preferred gear. In the Bahamas you can go without a speargun and do well, except having to deal with sharks..

  • Wow don that is cool as shit.

Dan you make a very good point. I feel like coming back empty would really beat home the obvious lesson that we have it way better today. My c90s will have never felt so good :)

  • Or they had it better in the day when huge fish were everywhere.

Here in Cali, the game fish off the beach are bigger than ever.
Newbies some times shoot 50 to 60lb White Sea Bass with a euro gun.

    Cheers, Don

  • Damn, over here in South Florida (Fort Lauderdale especially) there is so much fishing pressure that it seems barren out there at times.

Andrew, I'd be down to film and take pics if you decide to do it.

I don't know Andrew. To me, it would be kind of like taking this old bike.....and yes, she was a good one in her day.....out on a supercross track. :D
I think I'll stick to my modern gear. My body is "old style" but I can't do anything about that.

I took that into consideration. I almost feel like just doing it once for the experience would be worth it in the end. who knows... might sling me a huge hog :thumbsup2:
