Super modulus rubber speargun bands?

  • Does this exist anymore? It's been a while since I needed to buy more bands for my old guns but that last time I did my buddy and I bought a few hundred feet of what was called Super Modulus tubing. Somebody would make a run of this stuff every several years and the spearo's would buy it up. I'm down to my last few bands which I made up years ago and have been in the fridge in Ziplocs and encased in baby powder.

Is there something like it now that's commonly available?

  • It's just a marketing term, may have simply been good rubber. Taken literally it means the rubber is very stretchy. Of course there's a limit to how far you want to take that, I mean the balance between how much the rubber will stretch but still keep the stored energy over a period of time. These are the best bands you can buy today Speardiver Small Hole Speargun Band Rubber, they'll stretch as far as you can pull and keep power very well.

  • At the time, it was pretty good and pretty rare stuff. Riffe and Alexander sold bands but nobody "sold" this stuff. I "think" Wally Potts was the one with line on this stuff. I'll have to ask my buddy.

These bands could stay fully stretched for hours without loosing much if any power.

I'll take a pic and post it, but they are all black rubber with very small hole.

20 years ago it was the real deal.
I still have some in vac bags just for one of the Prodonovich guns I have.(Collection)
The black rubber was 1/2'' and the Tan was 5/8''. Jack called it Hi Modulus and it was.
I used to test it with bleed down cycles of up to 6 hrs to 250% elongation, it did not like 300%,for more then a hr.
It was truly a blend that Bill Lowery and Jack came up with, it was great rubber.
The tan stuff was prone to breakage with exposure to sunlight.

I currently use Dan's small id stuff and I'm very happy with the performance.

  • I have the black stuff. It's for a big reef gun I put together years ago. I tried it on an open water Alexander gun he made me, but I couldn't get that gun to shoot straight no matter how many bands I tried on it, so I dumped it. Thanks for the update.

Jack lived out on Point Loma in San Diego right? I get him and Wally mixed up. We went out there to his house a few times years ago when we were building guns and trying to get his take on what we were doing and get help with mounting his reel designs on them.

They both did , you may have been to Wallys house , he was the builder of the Potts ABS reel. They are are both together diving spots in heaven the last few years.....the fathers of spearfishing. Jack is on the left in this image.

  • I heard back from my buddy who initiated the buy for the super modulus he said; "We ordered the rubber as a part of a special order put in by a guy in the San Diego dive community (Dave Lawrey)." From what I understand, Dave has passed. Too small of world.
