No show year for wsb?

  • I've proabably been out on the water 30-40 times this year since June and have yet to comensure upon a single ghost. The hook and line boats had a decent few days earlier this year but have had terrible counts also. We obviously have a lot of yellows that keep it interesting but has anone else noticed a drop off in wsb sightings/harvest this year? Many of the divers I chat with on the beach are noticing the same thing.
I dive from pv through Malibu up to about the ventura jetty.

  • Iv been hearing the same thing. The reef and kelp fishing this year has been Very low , the halibut numbers are als really low this year but the blue water has made up for it :thumbsup2:

  • I don't do instagram. I just talk to guys at the shop and on the beach.
Maybe those guys have found them out at the islands. I don't have a boat so it's all beach entries for me

  • Hahaha Don. Sucks to hear about the WSB I wonder what's going on over there. I hear all sorts of stories about them though hopefully will be able to make it over there to shoot them and yellowtail on pole at some point

Both can be had on polespear with sliptip if your a good stalker, I have done yellows, but in the bed at spring I always use a gun.
There is no shortage of WSB when the water isn't as warm as a Jacuzzi. They just go way North.

At this point, I've gone 3 years without seeing one. Talking about it can't really make me see any less right?

  • Come to a Neptune meeting,;) The good news when the water cools they may hang half way through winter.

Ah you see I consider jacuzzi water to be my prime habitat, anything less I feel like I'm about to get frostbite :cold:

  • I don't know what a Neptune meeting is. Is it a local dive club?

Yes, the oldest dive club in america, freedive only. The Long Beach Neptunes meet once a month for pizza, beer and BS.

Sounds like you put in some water time. It can be helpful to keep a journal of your dives. Date, time of day, ocean temp, tides ,visibility, bait, bird activity, species present or absent....etc. After a while you will know when conditions are more favorable for certain species to spawn out. So you can focus your hunting efforts on high odds days.

Don is right about going North. I surfed the Elephant Seal Reserve in San Simeon about a month ago and regretted not bringing a speargun. Conditions were epic and fish were plentiful.

    Good Luck
