I mean the fish of course <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">
I whacked this fish a month ago and I´m not sure what species it belongs to. It seems like a small grouper or a large cabrilla. It weighed 14 kilos or 31 pounds. Accordying to a friend of mine the WR of mexican spotted cabrilla is 13 kilos. I want to have a positve I.D. of this fish..
Thanks in advance..
My first thought is a black grouper.
It looks like this but Epinephalus (goliath species) have rounded pectoral and caudal fins. Let me send your pic to an expert I know in Hawaii. I'll try to find out.
Monster
I think it is either a young gulfie or a monster Cabrilla. From the looks of it and assuming you got it In The Sea Of Cortez I think it is a young Pacific Gulf Grouper (Mycteroperca jordani). I have shot a couple smaller Gulfies that look the same. Look at the Gill plate if it comes to a dull point (see attachment) it is a gulfie How did it taste?
I too would side with a young Gulfie, I don't see the spotting a Spotted Cabrilla would have.

That looks like it. Pacific Gulf. And I believe it is a Mycteroperca, like the black grouper here. I was trying to Google groupers of Pacific Mexico but didn't see this one. Good call badehh.
Based on the picture, the word from Hawaii is M jordani.
