Hi from the UK :)

  • Hi guys,

I'm Tony from the cold, windy UK :) I've spearfished for about 12 years or so now and mainly try to get abroad chasing the warmer waters for obvious reasons.

The UK is still a lot of fun, we mainly hunt bass in the murky waters but every so often when the conditions are just right, the UK turns into one of the most beautiful underwater coast lines I have dived :)

I've spent more time than most on Ascension Island, I run guided trips there with Colin, as well as to several other really nice hot spots around the world. In the UK I sell RA gear and offer tuition, i doesn't pay much but its enough to keep me out of an office job and very happy with my lifestyle choice :)

My main reason for joining this forum is to find new places to travel to and spearfish at, even better if I can find some like minded people to hook up with. I'm also keen to add new destinations to my spearfishing trips website but finding great people at great locations is not always easy lol.

Spearfishing wise I love the pole spear as much as my guns and think its ideal for those situation where the fish are giving themselves up to easy, it seems to level things out a bit and make things fairer. I got a WR on the dorado last year with the pole and it was great fun chasing them around. She wasn't huge (just under 12kg) but she was a beautiful fish all the same and tasted all the better having struggled all day to catch!

So yeah, hello everyone and I'm looking forward to trying to find some new remote spearfishing spots in the middle of nowhere!

    Best wishes to all,

    Tony

  • My PR Ulua (GT) at 98lbs, shot last spring.

Ive seen video of BTs at Ascension, are GT's found there ever?

Sweet mother! BEAST!!! hahaha thats a monster :) I love hawaiian names for fish as well - so slick sounding ;)

No, sadly no GTs on ASI, loads of various jacks, wahoo, dorado, and of course the yellow fin tuna. Its pretty good for Marlin as well now around the fads. When I was last there my friend saw a nice 500 - 600lb'er, it came right under him slowly but he was reloading his gun hahaa, he was pretty 'frustrated' at the time lol. At the right time of year they really smash the dorado - Ive swam through shoals of them covered in slash marks and open wounds where a marling has very recently attacked the shoal. I have loads of pics on the site if you want to check it out Spearfishing trips around the world - the best spearfishing holidays

Hey quick question for you, I'd love to plan a trip to your neck of the woods but don't really have any local knowledge. That said I hear I should head for the big island, Kona beach for spearfishing - would you agree?

My son Jake lives in Kona. He's on here (jake). Try contact him. He's only been there for three months but he's been out a few times. He's on Facebook too Jake Bauman. Look for a guy with a big snapper in the water.

    Hey Hank,

    Thanks a million I will :)

  • Hi Hank sorry bud I tried to message you but I think I'm too new for that type of stuff on this forum. One of the main reasons I want to get to Hawaii is to set up a partnership with someone awesome so I can add that destination to my spearo trips website.

I notice you're currently in Belize which is another area of big interest to me. I've never been there yet myself but my brother spent some time there last year and said I defo need to look into it as a destination. He doesn't spear himself but he said he spoke to some locals and the fish were good there.

Whats it like over there for spearing and could you point me in a direction of someone amazing who does local trips that maybe interested in partnering? Thanks Hank, sorry for all the questions and its cool if you don't have much time for them all :)

Kona would be ideal due to its conditions (sunny, flat, easy access). Great reef diving in certain areas, good pelagic diving out at FADs and in the ono lanes (if you can catch it at the right time and are willing to swim).

BI has the best shore diving in Hawaii (IMO), but it has relatively little divable reef, due to the relative young age of the island. Coral has not had enough time to develop, resulting in less habitat, and a steep drop off in most places....but this is good for pelagic shore diving. Many divers regularly pick up Ahi and other pelagics from shore.

I feel like the older islands have better reef diving, but in most cases a boat is required and someone who is willing to show you some of their hunting grounds.

Ascension sounds awesome, someday Id love to travel there just to experience such a unique location. And of course slay a large pelagic. :D:D

  • Thanks bud this is great information, really appreciate it :)

I mentioned above to hank that I would love to partner with someone who offers trips over there, can you recommend anyone to contact and talk to?

Ascension wise, you defo need to experience it, even if its just once - its like the wild west out there when anything can and often does happen, a fantastic experience :)

the only person I can think of is Rob White of Blue Water Hunter Kona. I know there are guys who do small time charters (side jobs) but Rob has probably the best known spearfishing charter business in Hawaii.
