Polespear advice

  • Planning my first trip to the Bahamas, which means I need to acquire a polespear. I'd like to get one that has everything: good on the reef, good in the bluewater, and easy to travel with. Any advice is very much appreciated, since this is all new to me.

  • Im not an expert, but I have some experience with pole spears. 7" might be a touch long for the reef. There's a few companies out there like Gat-Ku that offer modular pieces to reduce pole spear size to transition from blue water to reef. Here's a link: https://gatku.com/

I'm working with Crist on a custom spear for when I get to Belize. It's a 2 piece designed for the reef and I'm psyched to get it. Aaron has a solid reputation for quality and customer service.

  • Most pole spear measurements do not include the length of the tip, which could be up to 18" or more for a flopper tip, less for a paralyzer.

  • I have a Crist...... It is a monster..... no regrets but is too much spear for what I do. It is real slow. It has its place but to me it should not be your one pole spear for all.... in Belize . It is the .50 cal. of pole spears, no doubt. and the craftsmanship cant be beat.

Nor cal.......... I bet it is perfect

I did notice that stuff is harder to come by there.:D I'm from the school of thought where 2 is 1 and 1 is none....so I've got extras on the list.

  • What Dan said. I would buy it before I consumed a day of my life to build it.
Pole spearing is primal.... you get to get close and look at the eyes., and confirm... yes I am a hunter and I am from a race of hunters.

I've got a 5' 2 piece Phoenix being custom built for me right now. It's a lighter pole spear...much more than the Zeus model. Stoked to get it!

  • Some of my best spearfishing buddies are RAVING about these poles and smashing records with um... worth a hard look. Neritic pole spears.
My pole was custom built by John of linghunt polespears... its a beast!! and sooooo versatile. Check him out, problem with him is he is always got a back log since he is the best ;)

  • Disclaimer: CJ, the owner of Neritic, is my best friend and I've personally had quite a bit of input on the design and development of these spears.

They are heavy duty spears designed with the intent of landing big fish and world records. They can also be disassembled for travel or configured in different lengths. CJ's dad runs a machine shop that manufactures high end aviation parts. Fuel pumps and other critical precision parts. The spears were a collaboration between the two. CJ's spearfishing expertise and his dad's machining and materials expertise. Occasionally I translated between the two of them. (my background is mechanical engineering) I was also one of the first testers.

The Neritic spears are made with extremely high quality (made in the USA) and CJ prides himself on customer service. Some of the main features are the ability to configure the spear into different lengths, heavy duty connectors and the tip. The slip tip that CJ developed is easily the best tip I have used for a polespear. It is a penta cut tip that is hollow ground. Similar to the most advanced arrow tips. It is EXTREMELY sharp. The other nice feature is it has a magnet in the base that holds it onto the injector rod. No rubber bands or strings to worry about.

If this sounds like a spear that fits your needs and targets and/or you have any questions about it feel free to PM me. I'm more than happy to answer any of your questions or put you in contact with CJ.

  • Thanks. The magnetic slip tip seems like a good idea. Sounds like it's going to be hard to find a spear that will fit all of my criteria, so I'll probably go with a Neritic or similar that can be broken down for easy travel and is tough enough to take a beating on the reef. Probably won't be doing much bluewater with the polespear, anyway.

  • Impressive products. I like the modular aspect of the spear and the quality is plain to see. My Crist spear us coming in next week. I highly recommend working with Aaron from a customer service perspective. I'll post up some pictures when I receive the spear.

LOL, I'm faster when the setups don't require every bell and whistle I'm in process of designing.

George, Got some new goodie I think you will want to have. Been working on a slip tip that utilizes magnetics as well, has two magnets and switches poles so it ejects the head on contact. More of a packaging issue now.

I think Aaron Crist has been proto-typing with small magnets, we had dialog on that many moons ago.

Anyhow lots of good polespear options out there, Competition is tough, but that provides higher quality products with better cost for the customers. Capitalism in its best form.

  • Great concept. Magnets. NIce.

If you like electro-magnetic fields you will love a Railgun. Still want to make one of this in my spare time.

Google it if you have not heard of it.

Still want to make a High Voltage Taser spear tip. Battery technology has gotten so much better, makes this more plausible. 3/4" pole spears provides the room needed to package it up. This will be a George Toy for testing after he signs legal release. lol
