Well, actually, I like the grouper 1000 times over wahoo for eating.

Seriously? I love me some grouper, but there is no comparing it to seared wahoo (IMHO)

Nice wahoo. Cool seeing the mountains behind you. Much more interesting than our flat topography. Thanks for the report.

David, thanks for the offer. I do hope to make it down there at some point. Looks beutiful and have heard nothing but positives about the area.

Jason, Nippers was rocking pretty good from what I hear.

yeah buddy. nice fish as always. You will have to show me how to spear those blacks.

as a side note i foolishly let my passport expire somehow during the summer..i am scrambling to get one here before too long....not cheap $$$

That sucks. You can do it yourself if you head to the Miami office. You don't necessarily need to pay the agents for an expedited service.

We'll try and get over there in August if the wx cooperates. How was Spanish?

Managed a trip to Grand Cay this weekend. Blasted through rainstorms and cleared at Walkers. Pulled into Rosies by 1000, marina was still full as most people were slow to mobilize w/ all of the rain. Checked in, topped off and headed out. Got some decent diving in b/w rain storms. Viz was fair, but improved w/ the incoming tide and eventual emergence of the sun. Once the sun showed around 1600, the rest of the weekend was great. Managed some decent hogs, w/a couple of real nice ones by local standards. Cleaned them up at double breasted and enjoyed some rum drinks. Dinner at Ron's Hotspot was awesome as usual and we hit the sack. Skies were decent as we pulled out of the marina for the trip home. Hit some spots along the way and found some scattered hogs, a mutton and a couple of blacks. No video this trip as I some how managed every possible GoPro SNAFU possible, save flooding the unit. Had a great trip w/ some good diving, can't wait to hit it again.

Most of my dive times are around 1:30-1:45 comfortably. I do not need to stay down there longer than that because there is no real advantage. I'm a spearo, not a freediver. I prefer not stress myself so I stay in between those dive times. I rather have more dives at the end of the day than a bunch of very long ones with longer breathups.

    Awesome

I have friends who have used notched shafts. Didn't seem to matter much. My favorite shafts are the Rob Allen 7mm Hawaiian sling shafts. They are awesome, but according to mike at florida freedivers, were a special order item and are no longer available. Sucks b/c I am on my last one.

FF divers now sells a KJ shaft that is similar, but not the same. They are decent, but I will miss my RA when some fish hauls ass with it.

I have used all sorts, from pretty floppy to stout and find that the 7mm is a good all around size for speed, distance, and hitting power. If I need a second shaft in a rocked up fish, sometimes I will use the 8mm to apply a little more persuasion on extraction.

FWIW, on a typical day trip I am covering 230-250mi and burning 120-140g in a 27 contender. I like to run day trips as it is an easier sell with the wife and lack of fish after 1 day of shooting has not been a problem.

Jason is dead on with the info on the blacks. They can be tough out in the open, better if they hole up. We see a fair amount of big cuberas, but those sob's are the master at cruising into the current, just out of range. I don't even bother with them when I see them

Do you guys ever see monster blacks deep that you cant get close to?.

can't speak for Jason, but depends on what you mean by "monster" and "deep." I don't have anywhere near your skills, but I have seen plenty of 60# blacks down to 60ft. Some we can get to hole up, some just keep cruising. I imagine that in your depths, there are some pretty sweet fish.

Nice vid, good spearing. Was that the polespear mounted Gopro?

Thanks. Yeah my GoPro is mounted on my shooter. I just remove the shaft for the second person perspective for a cleaner picture.

LOL on the water. Some of the fooatge that wasn't included looks like old 8mm film w/ all the "noise" in the frames.

After scrambling to find a crew, we were able to make a run this past weekend. Seas were calm, sun was blazing and fish were around. Water was a little on the cloudy side, but still nice. Current was moving most of the day - pretty much provided the impetus to step up to CF fins. Was able to do a little prospecting and found some new ground, always a nice way to end the day.

Hope you enjoy the video. Messed up on framing some of the dives, but still had some decent footage.
