Unihelm

  • I've just begun learning about boats. I have my mind set on a cheap RIB for spearfishing. I also wanted a center console for ease and comfort of steering. I want at minimum a 16ft RIB. The prices are very high even on used RIBs. RIBs without a center console are more reasonably priced. A center console has the disadvantage that it takes up a lot of space in a small boat. A few days ago I saw a pic of the unihelm for the first on a used RIB for sale. I really liked the idea and did some more searching and found these pics.

I'm thinking of buying a basic RIB and adding the unihelm to it. I haven't been able to price the unihelm yet. If someone knows more about it, cost, ease of installation, advantages, disadvantages please let me know what you think. It seems to me from the pics that it's part of the seat framework. I wanted to have a cooler as a seat but even if not it's still a good clean setup.

This is a very small boat, maybe less than 10ft.

  • looks cool...the only potential draw back i can see is that it is less substantial and therefore will not be able to help people hold on and provide the needed stability to the driver in chop...might be solid as a rock, but there just inst much there to hold onto/lean against/brace on.

i think that is of minimal concern though...let me know when you need divers :)

or any help with the install..happy to lend a set of hands

    i like to spear fish

  • Why not a motor with a tiller?

Less things to break and maintain, more space, and being at the back you see less wave action. Although I know you will only take it out on nice days.

  • those ribs are insane, the are very stable and they turn on a dime! I used to have one in Puerto rico, and I loved it. It really passed the test. I used it around the beach for 10 minutes without spilling my drink, I'm telling you... those cat style ribs are very stable!!!:thumbsup2:

Dude I've seen people on that and there is no way in hell you can use it for spearfishing in anything other than perfectly calm seas.

  • I did a sea/air trial on one of these 2 years ago. Was a lot of fun and great for spotting reef, finding birds on fish, smooth/fast ride an with the wheels accessory u could take off from a parking lot. Was a little loud though.
There was a dealer in Islamorada. MM84
