Not just spearing ,Dan...all consumptive use. Calling them "Marine Life Protection Areas" .

It's huge areas , too. And the things is, it goes from the coast line and then out. Bye bye beach dives.

THOSE MLPA s have been around for years,I don't like them but what can you do(you cant fight city hall )the closed area around here is in VANDENBERG AFB,you cant dive there anyway. Most of the areas are small around here. we all know its not the divers doing damage its the commercial fish boats.

has there been a huge decrease in fish populations? or are they just being tools?

They're just being tools. The size and frequency of catch in the recreational sector has increased dramatically since the implementation of commecial gillnet banning, some years ago in inshore waters. The fish have made a dramatic rebound. Of course the "science" behind the closures has been based on statistical survey analysis.:rolleyes1:
The only mandated reports of catches are those that are commercial or commercial sportfishing. So the numbers are, of course, going to decline; based on the fact that the commercial take has been limited to areas that have that have less productive areas or fishing methods.
The closures are simply going to have a snowball effect. With the closures of productive fishing areas, the only areas that will have allowable take are going to be areas that won't hold fish. The science behind "statistical survey catch" is going to show that no fish are now being caught. So, there MUST be a decline in fish populations. More closures WILL be necessary.:nono:

Wellcome to México

I was up at 5am and home from MPLA meetings at 8:00 PM .... We got GOTFUC-ED yesterday.I'm burned out.
I lost the the 6miles in front of my 10 year kids house in Laguna where I was teaching him to dive.
I post more about it after I can chill with a few drinks.:angry5:

It's a damn shame. I don't understand, diving has so much history in your state. I don't know much about the marine life part of it, but my gut is telling me it's all just about public image.
Wellcome to México
What do you mean?

I think he means WELL COME:thumbsup2:

Those MLPA will soon someday venture east. It really is just a matter of time. Those wacko alfalfa sandwich eating environmentalist are just out of hand and very powerful nowadays.

x2.
Wellcome is wellcome.
If you lost your fishing grounds to a stupid law, Mexico will allways be here to make you feel at home. We have plenty of fish for all us.

Here is the link to California DFG web page regarding MLPA. We also have Federal reserves coming to California to close off shore waters in the near future.

What percentage of the total shoreline is designated MLPA?

They "cherry picked" all the good habitat for reserves. The MPA as a percentage of the total coast is low but as a percentage of productive spots is high. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me.

Is there now incentive to go out and find new hunting grounds? Or is everything that's available too far now?
