To plug screw holes in the floor or walls of a boat that are no longer in use, can I use regular white sealant such as the one for bathtubs, or is the special marine stuff really much better?
Marine sealant alternative

The marine sealants are REALLY a lot better for that application. I've always liked 5200 for those things, but you could also used a two part liquid epoxy and use a syringe to fill the holes.

Good idea about the syringe Adrian. I may even add some white coloring to the epoxy.
-
You know why it's called 5200???
-
No, why?

Cuz you gotta wipe your hands 5200 hundred times to get it off:laughing3:
-
And it still doesn't come off.

Turpentine works a lot better for clean up rather than acetone.

Turpentine, acetone, mineral spirits tend to dry it too much so you really got to scrub your hands.
WD40 works wonders, comes right off.

Dan if you use a syringe it's better to mix really small batches of the epoxy and use a really slow cure epoxy because epoxy will take more time to cure while spreaded out but will cure real quick when it's bunched together. You'll be able to fill just a couple of holes if you fill the syringe with mixed epoxy before the whole thing flash cures in a matter of seconds. Better yet it's to use an epoxy syringe with a mixing nozzle that mixes the epoxy while it's being dispensed. Also you could add the white coloring very carefully to each unmixed part. Hope this helps.

IMO it is much easier to just wear a pair of hosptial gloves and throw them away when you are done or when they get 5200 on them.
I happen to know someone that can get them by the 100pair count :rolleyes1:size large?

Home depot has the large tubes for around $10 while West Marine has them for almost double.

Thanks Davie. I went and got the 5200 from Home Depot. At this price it's not worth it to look for an alternative. I just hope that after using a little bit I can cap it well enough that it won't dry out. Someone told me to use a screw in the nozzle.

screw works...just dont split the nozzle cos then it will backfire on you and ruin all the sealant ...D'oh!!!

Dan, I have tubes of the stuff laying around the shop. I can box them up and ship them to you,on your dime;)
