SWB Depths?

  • I have only freedived alone to about 20ft. I am curious about what depth the odds of SWB increase dramatically. From what I have been reading, most SWBs seem to happen once you pass the 70+ foot mark. Is this generally the rule?

  • You can have a SWB in a swiming pool in 3ft....

It depends more on breath hold time, hyperventilating and other variables. I would strongly recommend you to find a more experienced diver to go out with and ask him all your questions.

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • I believe shallow depths are more dangerous.

At deep depths you go down and come up quick. On shallow depths you go down and wait on the bottom. You can get too comfortable and confident after a while. You will never realize you are low on air and that's when it happens.

Well, 20 feet has been a challenge because I have either been fighting a class 3 rapid current (not my pic but where I used to fish. The pic looks worse than it is) or diving in murk that didn't clear up till 40ft (found out by scuba diving). I am out of shape right now but 3+ minute breath holds were easy for me when I was 20 and surfing everyday.

  • In that spot I would be much more concerned with the Bars finding you competing for food.;)
Don't be that concerned with SWBO right now, when you get to Florida hook up with some good Skindivers and they will help you. When you get settled in on base PM me if you don't find some one.

  • Seaweed is right, shallow water depths can fool you in to becoming too confident sometimes. You may say well "the surface is just right there" and think no problem, but, a BO can happen anytime without warning usually.

  • I think a very common swb occurs when you are diving almost near your max comfortable depth and you shoot a fish or something happens that causes you to be a bit more excited than normal. You realize that you are low on air or you used a bit too much of it. You are feeling really deprived from O2 like you have never felt before. You start to panic and causing you to swim faster to surface. Then you blackout.

I think with more experience and knowing your body you are likely to stay more relaxed instead of letting panic take over. Maybe the SWB in this case would turn into a safe surface or a controllable light samba.

I do think swb can happen to both type of divers. Novice to expert.

well put.. especially if you see ur shot isnt perfect and yu want to swim over to grab the fish to surface as oppsoed to just hauling it up. or when ur stalking a fish and u think another few kicks and i may be close enough as it keeps swimming away.(at least i know these situations have pushed me pretty close before)
