Yes the proof is in the video result. It could be sharper with a diopter but but then you also lose more light. If anyone needs any sharper than this then the Gopro is not the right tool for the job.
A newer video i shot in sunlight gives much more detail and color, obviously at a certain depth artificial lighting will be required. I only need to go to 10ft down so is ok for me.
There is a whole thread on this topic and general Gopro discussion on my forum.

Parts list
6x Mach Screw, Stainless, Pan, 0-80 x 3/8 L (5/16L might work better if you find them) I got mine at Ace Hardware for about $1.50. Here is a Grainger link
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1ZB13?Pid=search.093 In. x 11 In. X 14 In.Acrylic Sheet 11x14 sheet is $3.50 at home depot

6x 2mm thickness washers for the screws since they are a little long. Again 5/16L may work without a spacer washer on the outside of the port.
Cut a disk from the acrylic sheet and drill the 6 holes for the screws. You can use the black ring from the original housing as a guide.
Take off the original lens and gasket. Replace the gasket with the 4.5mm oring and lay the flat port on top and screw down to where the lens of the camera is not compressed by the flat port.
There are variations of this that could probably remove the o-ring from getting in the picture, but this is a robust seal. The only thing you will have to be cautious of is at depth the o-ring may compress and press against the lens. I plan to put some spacers between the port and the housing to keep if from compressing more.
Here are some photos of the latest prototype.

Thanks Dave. I'd use a Dremel cutting disk to shorten the bolts and eliminate the spacers.

For those interested, I should have the Gopro HD Hero cameras in 3 days.
-
nice Dan, you gonna keep one for your self? lots of fun shooting dog videos put me in that suit and I want to play with Rocky more
I sent the housing off to jeff last week, but it was returned to me because I am retarded and printed the shipping label with my address as the TO instead of the FROM.... D'OH!
I remailed it on monday..should get it today or tomorrow

It arrived this morning.

Of course I'm keeping one for myself. Can't wait for Jeff's fix.

Is this camera THAT GOOD that is worth all these rework?

I can't speak for the quality, but DANG the housing is tiny! Size #0 screws . . .
Does anyone know if the lense of the camera extends up and into the curved lense of the housing? In other words, if I have a flat plate insteade of the domed lense, will it interfere with the camera lense?
-
Jeff,
The lense extends about 2mm past the outer edge of the ring where the screw holes are.Dave

Nuts.
Thanks Dave.
-
marco- yes
jeff- it does, I would have guessed more than 2mm, but I trust Dave on his measurements
-
Any progress on the fix?
-
I have two ideas sketched up, and some material ordered.
-
Not sure if anyone has posted this and has any feedback. I just ordered one.
