I was forwarded to Helter skeletons for fish skulls. They are in Florida I believe and they do some nice work from what I can see on their website.

Did you complete that Barracuda?

No, I boiled it and it fell apart. Too much work to piece back together. I would try again with the maggot method.
Ive been doing some research and have a few different things I want to test out to get those nice professional looking lilly white skulls so let me do a couple more first to get my technique down (before i have people shipping me irreplaceable heads in dry ice lol) and then I would gladly accept commissions. And thanks for the compliments guys, overall im pretty happy for a first try.
i would behappy to send you a few nice sized cuda heads to experiment with...going on a keys trip this weekend and I'll shoot a few biggums for you if you want

do you still have the pieces?
No, that was a long time ago.
Something i just did for a little practice, Ribbonfish
Started (after cleaning) with this
After a little assembly I have this
That's very cool. Looks like your getting better and better at it.
Excellent. That is wicked cool with it so small
Cool. And way more satisfying than completing a puzzle.
What I'm taking on next
Cool thread! I actually have to do this to an entire YT snapper as part of a class this summer. I tried getting as much of the meat off as I could to not be wasteful but that isn't an option if I am to keep all the small bones in place; so now I am starting over.
I am going to get a few YT and try a few methods. I'll keep updates on this thread.
I heard that once skinned one can use coca-cola to dissolve the meat. It's a light corrosive and not supposed to damage the connective tissues and cartilage too much as long as it is monitored. May give that a go as well.
I look forward to seeing that
I put the jaw of my last halibut up a tree to dry out and have the bugs do some work on it. I will post pictures if it works.
Spanish mackerel skull i just did, macerated (basically allowed to rot in warm water, it all falls apart though so you have to like jigsaw puzzles), degreased in acetone and whitened with peroxide.
I love these. Your work is getting better and better
When will you start doing these on commission
Very nice work.
That skull looks very good
Thanks guys, as for commissions ive got a big cuda head to do and once i get that all pretty i think I will declare myself ready.
And I have successfully stabbed myself in the thumb with the barracuda :frustrated1:
