All I know is trout can see it in dark water.

Lime green seems to show up nicely most of the time.

This pertains to road signs which people are familiar/conditioned with.
Traffic signs - Standard Colors
GREEN:
Guide, directional information.
RED:
Stop, do not enter or wrong way.
BLUE:
Motorist services guidance. Also used to identify parking spaces for disabled drivers.
ORANGE:
Construction and maintenance warning.
BROWN:
Public recreation areas, guidance to areas of cultural and historical significance.
YELLOW:
General warning and advisory of unexpected roadway conditions.
WHITE:
Regulatory.
BLACK:
Regulatory.
FLUORESCENT YELLOW GREEN:
High emphasis warning of school, pedestrian, and bicycling activity.
FLUORESCENT PINK:
Warning of incident Management activity. Most people don't pay as much attention to red signs, they are more of an inconvinience, slow down look around and gun it. However yellow signs are respected due to the increased chance of running someone over and killing them.
I think conditioning has a great deal to do with what people do on the roads and carries over subconciously on the water.
-
very good point Davie...i think you are correct, we are conditioned to notice the yellow.
Chartruce is a very good lure color...that also have to do with the much longer wavelength of green making it keep it's color in most depths
-
My conclusion is that it's not only what's most visible, but which color affects us most psychologically as being out of place, that's what causes an alert.
All same size and location.
Lime green.
Red.
Yellow.
Orange.

I saved all your images, than took turns zooming out as some times I have to spot guy's buoy's from far away.
For my eyes; i lost the red one first, orange second, the lime green third, with the yellow one having the best vis from distance.Cheers, Don

We need to ask abachar, he has trained eyes for color.

Best to worst
Green. Yellow. Orange. Red. From far I couldn't see it at all
-
Nice trail Dan, but I think there is something tricky. Not only color is what you are involving in the test. There is also brightness of the dot. i.e.You can use dots of the same color ( same wavelenght), but with diferent brightness. Specially with that dark background. Maybe a brighter, color saturated orange or red will do more contrast, thus more noticeable. Thats just my humble opinion.
Cheers!! -
The most visible for me in those conditions was white
-
Shucks I meant yellow, it looks whitey at first glance. White is a terrible color to have at sea, is highly visible, but should the sea is heavy, it would be immediately lost in the water maelstrom

That's a fact Jack.:nono:
