• So im getting a new gun!
    :fanwave:
I Got the go ahead and checked the bank tonight to see the prices i could afford. So basically i can choose any gun on the market that i want. But her comes the part in which I'm posing on the form. I'm torn between Riffe and Wong. Now for you guys going :wtf2: is wrong with me, Wong any day, here comes the catchy part. I'm torn between buying 1 Wong for the rest of my life, or 2 Riffes. The Wong would be a Hybrid 55 in GR Semi Enclosed or Mid Handle 9/32 shaft. Once i add the bells and whistles, I'm looking around a grand or more for it. The Riffes would be the other option as i would like a Euro Series E-110X and a Mid handle series 55''. The reason for 2 is i have a friend who gave me an offer i would almost be stupid to say no to (yes he's an authorized dealer), and this gives me the option of having a reef gun, and a Blue Water gun for the big boys. I know Wong gives a lifetime warranty on his gun which i love :thumbsup2: but Riffe is also offering a 3 year warranty on their guns to. Another thing is I've shot a Riffe once and seen it in action multiple times. Its great at kicking ass and taking names, for any fish really. But i do know that Wong is known all over the world for makeing these bad boys. I have even seen the photos of yall shooting Wong's and getting some fish. I want a wood gun because i love that they do have a buoyant float to them after being fired, so no metal tech series. Give me your reasons PLEASE!!! The deal for Riffe ends on Jan 31st! So times a wastin...

  • Carry on Harry, I never shot a Wong so talk to him...:D Two Riffes could make a Wong,:toast::toast:

  • I don't like midhandles. I owned a wong for a bit and i sold it. I felt like the shot was a little slow and kicked a bit for my taste but I was used to my pneumatic shooting bullets with no recoil. After watching Sheri on speargun hunter get her face bashed in with the butt of gun, I really don't like them. The idea of having the butt of gun so close to your face is scary. I guess you need midhandles for big fish in blue water but then again, i bet most big fish are shot really close.

This is just my personal preference. All guns kill fish and wongs have taken down plenty of fish.

The gun i use now is perfect for me. It has everything I look for in a gun without any drawbacks.

  • I feel as though i've seen plenty of footage of large fish being taken with euros.
i wouldnt get a mid handle without using one first, i dont like it.

I agree. I haven't been blue water that much. I find it too boring and slow and I enjoy deep diving. But it would be cool to kill a huge Wahoo.

  • I shoot black sea bass, grouper, cobia, triggers, snapper, Aj's Sheepshead, Flounder, Dolphin. Those are just off the top of my head. I have been shooting Aj's for a while, and now i want bigger, blue water fish, like barracuda, African Pompano, and maybe sometime in the next half year or so, try Wahoo and tuna. So i need a gun that i can pack the punch, but can also take every day fish as well...

  • Either way, my JBl isn't making my shots. Imma buy a gun before the session is up and running again, and the sooner i get it, and use it in the pool, and get use to it, the better ill be off. I live in NC if that helps, so reefs, wrecks, and blue water. I'm also looking at a min of 65-70feet as well. Just food for thought....

My first gun was a mid handle, and i LOVE them. I guess its what i was brought up on and got comfie with it as well. For me it was easier to follow fish with the mid, allot easier, and i put my hand on the butt of the stock so it takes recoil away.

  • We pretty much shoot the same fish down here. My suggestion would be for something in the 60"/130cm range.

Having owned and shot both the guns you're considering, my preference would be the Wong.

However, I'll just add, that I got 3 high quality railguns also with lifetime warranties in the price range you mentioned. One of them was even carbon/kevlar;) A 90, 110 and 130cm. Pretty much got all the bases covered with that arsenal.

Railguns are generally much cheaper, easier to maintain, and you won't have a mental breakdown if a fish takes a gun from you one day or it gets caught in the props or slammed in a car door, ....etc...:D

  • I would suggest not limiting yourself to either a Wong or a Riffe. I think there are lots of other guns out there that are high quality and a lot cheaper. If you are resigned to Wong or Riffe, look at used. You can pick up a used Wong 55 for a few hundred below a grand.

  • Really? Im just nervous buying somthing that the person before me hasent payed any respect to. I baby my guns... More than my dog really haha. And i know NOTHING about railguns.Besides, i love wood guns, and correct me if im wrong but i belive all rainguns are metal. Or Not?

  • Dan, yes, they are Aimrites. I like the handle very much. I also like the fact that the triggers are set far enough out that it's not in the crease of my finger but on the pad, as it should be.

As mentioned before I have come to find the ease of a rear- handled gun much more appealing in the waters I currently dive. I also lost a brand new custom gun the first fish I shot with. That coupled with numerous close calls out here, I just decided that the best course of action was to find a quality, reliable and affordable gun, that I would consider "expendable". I have yet to be disappointed with my choice in these railguns.

Nick, my first choice for a wood/ mid-handle gun would be a Spear-Diver, but unfortunately, Gil is no longer making guns for the general public.

You may want to also look into Big Daddy spearguns. I believe he is from your area. Guns look beautiful. I haven't seen or handled one personally, but they definitely seem worth looking into.

As far as Wong, my favorite gun that he built was the MG Special rear-handle plus, very well balanced and capable of taking all the species previously mentioned. It's also 57", which is a good length for an all-around gun

  • Well it's the same old same old. I hate the fact that there's not one commercially made gun I can wholeheartedly recommend, makes me look like an asshole criticizing everybody else's spearguns. But I know what I like and it's the last gun I built. If it were mass produced it would fill an existing empty niche as long as guys were experienced enough to figure it out. Problem is wood gun aficionados take a really long time to come around :atongue:

  • You might want to look into some of the other brands. I have a Riffe euro 100X and I absolutely love it. There are some brands out there like Koah and Seasniper that make some really nice guns and can also fill the roles your looking for. The reason I mentioned the Koah brand is because they make an enclosed track gun that can be overpowered to give you some blue water hunting and also perform on the reefs. I dont have any personal experience with the brand but Ive heard goof things. The other option is the one Dan alluded to, building your own gun(s). Its not necessarily cheaper than a Riffe but you will get exactly what you want. Im in the process of building a 55" enclosed track rear handle plus gun that is similar to a riffe (becasue thats what I learned with). With some help from people on the forum you can make a great gun.
