Best footpockets for boney foot?

  • Hi Guys,

    I've been diving with cressi gara 3000 LDs for a while in size 7-8. While the footpocket is pretty comfortable on most of my foot and 7-8 is a good fit (I wear 8.5-9 shoes). I have very boney feet and it seems to squeeze and put pressure on a protruding bone of my largest toe. This makes for some serious pain by the end of a dive. Ive tried to adjust my finning technique to put less pressure on the insides of my feet, but no matter what I do they hurt.

    I am wondering if there are any foot pockets out there that are either wider or softer enough to account for my alien toe. If there isnt, im wondering if anyone with similar issues has figured out a solution such as maybe over sizing and using a thick booty?

    I think this problem is made worse by the fact that the foot pockets are flat, but my foot slopes smaller away from my large toe, so the large toe is very tight and gets the brunt of the pressure on upstrokes.

    I am planning on purchasing some c90 fins from dan at pursuit very soon, so if any of the 3 pockets he carries fits the bill that will be even better. Ive attached a few images that describes exactly where the pressure point is on my foot in these cressi fins.

  • H Dessault f/p have the softest pocket. I've had a couple of guys with a bony protrusion on their foot end up with H Dessault footpockets. Next time you're here you can try what I have. There's really no way to know until you try, sometimes f/p that you wouldn't expect end up being the most comfortable. Other than that a larger f/p and a thicker sock seem like the logical route to me. Although as a rule I try to use the thinnest socks possible, down to just Lycra or even barefoot.

  • I have a bone protrusion on the top left big toe joint. The H.Dessault pockets are nice and soft in this area while giving a great fitting and powerful foundation for Pursuit med C-90 blades.

  • That's called a bunion.

    I haven't tested the H Dessault f/p. So I can't speak for them.

    I tested several other pockets and I found the softest to be the Beuchat, the Mares, and the OMER Stingrays.

  • I use C90s in Beuchat pockets...It is a pretty soft setup but i really enjoy not having blisters or getting tired while swimming in current.

  • Hmm *wikipedia's*, why yes it is. Good to know, ive heard the term bunion before but thought it was more of a skin thing then a bone/tissue thing. I've never noticed it in my life until doing long dives with those cressi fins.

    I went over dans today and picked up a new set of fins. Between the footpockets he carries the omer melleniums were most comfortable, but all of them seemed to feel better then the cressi's.

    I went for a nice long swim in the pool and the problem seems to be completely eliminated. The omer foot pockets are much tighter near my ankle and the top of my foot, and much roomier near my toes, this causes the pressure of finning to be distributed evenly on the top of my foot, instead of at the end of my foot.

    Red = more pressure finning.

    Not to mention how much amazingly better these cf blades are compared to the plastic. :thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

    Thanks again Dan!

  • Just a quick photoshop. I turned on snap to grid, drew the lines on a new layer, turned transparency lock on, and then painted red/green on the lines.
