What's a good paint for a motor cowling?
Paint for boat motor cowling

Car paint. I would use urethane.
-
automotive base/clear or a single stage automotive paint, either or would have to be professionally sprayed. stay away from the cans that they sell at marinas, they are junk

Make sure your motor has proper galvanic protection (sacrifice anode). And if it has it, make sure you don't paint it.

Dan, I painted mine with the paint that Johnson Motor company sells for this purpose. It wasn't too expensive, didn't take all that much paint, and looks fine. Lasting well after 5 years in the sun and heat.

Now if I could just drop the rod holders a foot or so I would have a deckhand!

Dude! It has a reflection!
I learned a few things prepping and painting this cowling two times, and being stopped just short of attempting it for the third time.
1. I was wrong to think that I could conform with any kind of utilitarian paint job, in other words don't paint with a roller :rolleyes1:
2. Don't paint with a laquer paint over an enamel paint :dumb:
3. No matter how carefully you spray paint and clear coat with a can, it will never come close to looking like a professional paint job.
4. If you want a good finish best let a pro do it right. This means base coat then a clear coat, using the right paint with a spray gun.
