I went out to the second reef first but couldn't see so I came back to the first reef and was lucky to see and shoot 3 hogs <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x"> Which was way better than I expected to do, so soon after all this high wind and seas.
Water temp is already beginning to drop so spearos might begin to plan ahead their wetsuits for the coming winter.http://spearfishing.world/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Saw several HUGE bait balls. One was even inside of the first reef :@
I paddled out into the middle of one bait ball that was aprox 30yd X 30yd big. The sea was black with bait. The bait was jumpin and the birds were dropping and hitting the water all around my yak I slipped into the water in the middle of all this but the viz was so bad that I couldn't see what predators were after the bait
I was just VERY happy to be back in the water finally

  • Went to the beach today with some friends, water was definitely colder. Maybe it was all this rain?

But as Hau said, viz was mad shitty, saw lots of bait! Seems like the spearing is going to be getting better! I'm heading out tuesday. I really hope that its going to be separable.

  • The mullet are running I thinks that what you guys are seeing. You guys might want to change your setup a little in case you see some game fish chasing bait.

  • they're not mullet is what I was seeing. large schools of pilchards was what I was seeing close to shore. Mullet may be deeper where hau was. Im going to try and get out tomorrow, i'm drying out and can't stand this anymore!

fishingdude--- that is EXACTLY what was happening yesterday.:toast:

Schools of pilchards close to shore and schools of mullet out on the second reef
Me and Scott hunted bait balls last year and had a GREAT time shooting macs as they came in and hit the bait balls
I've had this type of spearing get REALLY exciting when the tarpon were hitting the bait balls :@
Tarpon don't have the sensory systems of sharks and therefore a 100-300lb tarpon can come shooting past a spearo very fast and close as they chase the bait :@

Truer words were never spoken. I haven't been out in a month! :angry5: and I have a new yak (new to me anyway) that I still haven't taken out. I would call out and join but I have this work thing. :angry5:

  • mike, you have two choices, lower temp or less time...i have a nelectric smoker so t is one temp, 195 at the top of the chamber, perfect for me, as I only smoke fish and dont want it to break 200.

for normal fish, whole or large fillets, 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch, two hours is the golden time...i like apple and hickory mixed for my light fishes (snapper grouper) and really any hardwood for the oilier fish like macks

mullet would be delicious any way imaginable, they are the best smoked fish...possible second to a kingfish

    i like to spear fish

  • spearos---I'm glad that I got to spear yesterday, cause this forecast is Bul* Shi* :angry5:
I'm gonna go chase cars on my bicycle X(

Solo today, the viz sucked, I saw no fish and the beach surf was like 3-4f :(
The good part was that I got to get out spearin with blue sky, gentle breeze, warm water, warm air and an exciting yak surf ride back into a beach with surf girl beach buns <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">
The LG said that the H&L guys on the pier had caught a 5-6f shark and that he had seen sharks working up and down the near shore break. I talked to Scott Rapp and he said that he had spotted sharks up in his zone this morning also.
We are hoping that tomorrows viz is better than todays :attack2:
