Recent Trip pics and Canon S100 review

Emil & I took a hard deserved mini mancation to my home island of Curaçao over the weekend, and between the debauchery managed a few dives at some of my favorite spots on the island. Unfortunately it was blowing a steady 25-30 knots the entire time, so the fishier windward side of the island was out of bounds...

It turned out to be the perfect occasion to test the new Canon s100 compact point and shoot digital camera with canon housing that Dan and I had been discussing recently, and both decided to buy.

Here are some of the pics from the trip. You can judge the camera quality for yourself. I am extremely happy with it considering it is tiny, weighs next to nothing, and is easy and intuitive to use.

If anybody has any questions, either regrding the island or the camera, just let me know...

LOL! That's called being a good spearfisherman. You let the fish come to you... That giant mutton was about 5 ft away at 70ft or so... Took a long time getting a good pic of him, but it I remembered what Cameron K told me about muttons. If you get below them on the wall or sloping reef, their curiosity will get the best of them, and they come in close to investigate... Zooms on underwater cameras are just about useless...

Dan, I pretty much always shoot at 24mm, although if the subject is close enough I might zoom in a little bit to "get even closer". But if the subject is more than a few feet away, it is useless. The basic rule is the more water between you and your subject, the shittier the picture. It is key to get as close as possible. Long aspetto dives make taking fish pics easier. Don't bother with the red filter, the camera has an UW setting that adds the red filter effect automatically if you want. Works well, I think.

I'm still sorting through images, but will post them to my web site once done at much higher resolution so you can see the true detail. All in all I am happy. Only thing about the housing is that I wish I had a larger lens area to make the over/under shots easier. The G10 housing has a lot of glass area, making those shots a breeze. With this housing it is HARD.

Yeah, that jump was my way of waking up that morning. About a 45ft drop, and then a 200 yard swim back to shore to the point where you can climb back out... Gets the blood flowing, no need for coffee after that.

Over/under is where you show both what happens above and under the surface in the same frame.
