Well, as the title states I was finally able to get in the water once again. The last time I went spearing was July 2011. I will try to keep it as brief as possible and if you guys have any questions I'll try to answer them.
It all started two months ago when I got a phone call asking me if I wanted to be part of a small group of spearos with fish killing intentions. As soon as I heard that the killing grounds were going to be the waters of Dry Tortugas I was in. We departed from Key West on Friday May 5 and came back late Sunday 7th. We dove a couple of spots along the way and started filling the coolers. Seas were a little choppy but definitely doable. The biggest challenge was the visibility which remained a hazy 20-25 ft the whole time. Luckily for me we stayed around 16-45ft the whole time. With my lack of water time/training I didn't think I would be able to dive the 60+ I used to dive 3 years ago. Were were extremely selective in order to safe cooler space for larger fish. IT SUCKED THAT WE COULD ONLY HAVE ON DAY'S LIMIT ON THE WAY BACK TO KEY WEST. We called and asked a bunch and there was no way around this. So needless to say we ate lots of fish ceviche style which was awesome. Probably the best I've had ever. I must say the red grouper populations is VERY healthy in those parts. We had an absolute blast. Here are some pictures...
