Reefchief's oceanic adventures

  • I really thought about shooting him but I didn't know nothing about handling or cleaning it and...I wasn't a Boy Scout but, I still want to be prepared.

I was genuinely surprised by that guy. He was nestled into the ledge edge that was an overhang. I was over the top and holding the edge looking under neath. I literally looked right at the fish, his back and side, and put my hand right on it!! I didn't see it at all. It just moved and I instinctively yanked my hand back and looked to see him. I was soooo lucky.

  • Cool vid. But I'm not sure about the color adjustment you did, everything looks too green. To eliminate the blue tone from Gopro hero3 footage you need a red filter Snap On Filters For GoPro HERO3

It did look a tad more green than I remember lol...that snap on filter looks badass. Is it suitable for shallower stuff (20-30) feet or would it still be too red??

  • Yeah after looking at the video more Its definitely way green when Im not close to the bottom. When Im inside the lobster holes etc it looks really good, but outside of that its way too green. Im gonna fix it and re-upload it.

  • Thanks for the info. Dont plan on messing with them but good to know.

Since a lot of the video was green as hell I went back into cinestudio to see what I could do. I found out you can easily keyframe all your video settings such as exposure, w/b, contrast, etc. I did what I could to make it look decent.

The raw video is actually quite green and washed out. Partially because I started recording them at depth and the viz/color wasnt that great. But it also seems that the gopro 3 tries to correct the blueness more then the gopro1 did.

With more cinestudio tweaking I think it turned out better but some colors are still weird. Although I like it better then the washed out monochrome blue everything of my go pro 1 videos.

Im really interested to see what this thing can do with a red snap on filter from Dan, good viz, and some less intense tweaking in cinestudio.

  • Got out with Frank(Hardline) today off Hollywood. Had a blast, got some fish, missed some fish. But had a pretty awesome and freakishly long beach dive filled with cool stuff like sharks and guitar fish and big turtles.

We picked up an emergency wetsuit from Dan before heading out. Frank got a new predator red 3Mil after a fitting from Dan.

The morning started flat but before we got in it started blowing and kept up till we got out (figures lol) All day we had a crazy west wind and white caps. but the viz was doable so we went out to the second reef.

Early on Frank missed a nice mutton that was just out of range. When we got to the second I missed a nice hog. Right as I shot, a wave pulled my float and gun and the shot missed by like 4 feet. Frank shot a nice eating size cuda, and then a jack, I shot a cero. Then a pretty good sized shark showed up. He passed by cruising and I followed him trying to get a video. As I was doing that a huge charter boat buzzed us so I went from trying to film the shark to trying to figure out where my float was and where the boat was coming/going (you can hear it in the video) A little while later frank called me over and said the shark was back. I caught him trying to take a pass at our fish so we put the fish into the banksboard and didnt have any more issues.

By that time the sun was kind of low so we went in. After getting mobbed by tourists as usual we arrived to our car 30 minutes passed a 5 hour parking pass about 10 minutes before the meter maid arrived.
