Frickin' Jake.. spearfishing Belize

  • For the bigger snappers we hit deeper spots. Doc and DuQuesnay , 72 and 75, old farts…..they actually refer to me as "the boy" at times….haha….like to work the shallows. They know how to get fish. :thumbsup2:

  • I'll check it out. Maybe I can get some tips. Thanks Marco.

Just saw something on Google. It's a "day snorkeling" outfit. Looks like they go to Shark Ray Alley, a nice cut in the reef between Ambergris and Caye Caulker. They feed the nurse sharks and rays there so they come right up to you. Tourists love it.

I didn't see anyone killing fish though.

Buit there is a very nice cut off Caulker. I H an L fished there with a friend years ago. Snapper, jacks, barracuda....ripping current. I'd like to check it out someday but it's really far to go on my boat. 55 miles or so.

  • Interesting. Not that I'm going to hire him, but sent a pm and he charges 70$ for a day out including gear, guidance and refreshments. That would be cheaper than my gas & beer share if I go out with you! :rolleyes1::laughing:

And I won't have to help cleaning the boat when we're back :rolleyes1:

But if I ever make it to Belize, you'll have to withstand me! :D:cool2::toast:

  • I just glanced through the Other International threads on spear board. Is this guy's name "thespearfishing"?

Yeah...it's nice not having to deal with that bullshit. Thanks Dan. :thumbsup2:

  • Jake, Mo and the new guy on here, Swimguy and me got out. Went to one of our most reliable dog snapper spots but none. Only a few cubera of which Jake got one.
I got this barracuda while he was lying on the bottom digesting. I've seen them do this pretty often. After they eat, indicated but finding a fish in the gut after i shoot them, they get darker and the black really stands out on them. And they''ll just lie on the bottom,

This Swimguy....he's got a future in spearfishing. A competitive swimmer in high school and college. Great form diving. He says he's a beginner and was comfortably doing 60-70 foot dives. One was 80 for sure.

It was great being in the water after about 5 weeks. I was really relaxed too. jake shot a grouper that got in a hole. I was watching and really relaxed. Went down and tried to wrestle it out. On the way down as I got there i noticed it was a bit harder to get air up in my mouth to equalize. Came up and was 80 feet for 1 min 20 sec. Not bad for an old fart.

  • Swimguy got a couple dog snappers. He's camera shy. haha

I was going to get a cooler pic this morning but the fish were all in the freezer except the ones we're eating today. Mo got a nice black and a BIG hog too. I got a nice hog, Jake got another nice snapper.

  • This one was mine :). It was the biggest I shot that day.

On my first try at 80' I saw a pretty large grouper (Jake said 20+ lb) and shot it but my placement was poor, high on it's back. He was able to shake the spear out, which may have been fortunate because I don't have a reel yet. Might have lost my gun on that one or had to spend some time recovering it if he holed up.

Nothing compared to Jake's and Hank's, but I'm learning. Thanks again to Hank and the crew for allowing me to tag along and learn the ropes from the real experts! I had a blast and can't wait to get back in the water as soon as I can.

  • It's calm again here today. What happened to your fins? My Speardiver fins....two pairs.....have been abused, kicked round, pushed off the bottom, reset in other pockets. Even JAKE can't break them and when he was little we named him Chief Broken Gun. He broke everything.
Anyway, the wahoo need a break over there. The Fish Gods have spoken.....

May go with speardiver, my right fin on a accent snapped in two. 16 miles offshore in rough water, second drift, just started getting into the fish. No wahoo were around but lots of fat blackfin tuna! Heartbroken! I don't get the chance on my wahoo grounds to target tuna as I will always pass up a 20lb tuna for a 40lb wahoo. But that day I had the perfect excuse to go deep and bag my first blackfin, fin broke... day over [emoji22] I have been to lazy to write up a report and show video. It was also another day being serenaded by whales.
