Frickin' Jake.. spearfishing Belize

  • Try again Don. It's working for me now. Sorry about that.

No sorry needed mate, that last picture is cute. Nice shooting, love those size fish Tahitian style, wrapped in palm or banana leaf, yum.

    Cheers, Don

  • What a day. NIce shallow spot but the waves were rolling in. The water on top of the reef spurs is only about a foot deep with cuts in between about 10 -20 feet deep and narrow....like 6 to 10 feet wide. When the waves break over the shallow part, the bigger ones suck you in and drop you on the reef. I have a big bruise on my thigh, a sprained hand, and a beat up gun. Also...this is a good one...I stuffed a school master snapper up my wetsuit top, after getting rolled on the reef....and he bit me with the classic snapper mouse trap jaw snap. He had hold of the skin right on my sternum and wouldn't let go. I had to drop gun and weights, unsnap my beaver tail, pull up my top and ouch...he was still hanging on. If I pulled him the skin was stretching....I finally pried his mouth open. Jake was laughing his ass off.....nice kid.
If he comes on and posts I was screaming like a little bitch....it's a lie.
Look at DuQuesnay's fins. Old Riffe blades fit into Beachat pockets, ties with fishing line. He's a classic.

  • We just ate some of the smaller snappers for lunch. Fish like that is like a Grade A US New York steak. No need spices or seasoning. Just the taste of beef.
This fish is the same. Fried just right and eat it plain with just a little salt. So good...

Amen on that call. I love the small fish. So much sweeter and more delicate than their big brothers.

    i like to spear fish

  • Hank you were the topic of conversation today and wondered if you could repost your pics of your PB Cuberas that used to be up but seemed to have disappeared?

  • Here you go Greorge. I got another couple in the 35 lb range but have to dig them up. The biggest was 53 lbs. The one that looks beat up was about 43. He tried to get in a hole that I had chummed. But the hole was only 3 feet wide and the spear is 5 feet long. hah.

  • A few from yesterday. Lot of thunder and lightning in the morning. But Doc and Dukes are die hard old farts so out we went. Turned into a great day. We're going to Glover's Reef with Doc in 10 days Going to spend a few nights at his house there.
I feel like I post the same pics all the time. But I never remember to take photos on the boat or we're too tired and everyone is eating too lazy to dig fish out of the cooler.
Look at the grouper Mo is holding with Doc. I shot it and as I dropped down, it acted normal. Looking up, getting ready to bolt. After I shot it I felt bad though. Look at the tail. It's deformed or something bit it off. Jake said, "dad, he was looking at you saying, "really? You're going to shoot ME"?" haha.
And yeah, the small ID rubber works. I only missed once. The shot was good but the fish bolted right as I pulled the trigger.

  • Cant speak for everyone but for me it is something to look forward to every week seeing what you and the family have rustled up off the bottom... My only complaint is that you dont empty the cooler everytime and let me share in your hunting triumphs.
Yes I! that's the pics of Cuberas I wanted to see Bruddahhh.

  • Next time I'll lay them all out.
We had a few trigger fish in the cooler. Doc and Dukes shoot trunkfish too. Really good eating. I don't shoot them but I guess I may start. Jake and I are usually looking for snappers or grouper....in case you hadn't noticed....:).....but the triggers are really good and not so easy to shoot. They're around a lot but they seem to know how far my gun can shoot.

  • It's hard to believe the quantity and quality of fish you guys get on such a consistent basis, I am so envious of the dishes you can prepare. Great spearing

  • More incredible pics. Thanks Hank.

  • Nice haul again. So when are you going to start running a diving charter?

I've dreamed of that. But I'd need a bigger boat so we could do overnights on the farther away places. Right now I have to keep farming shrimp to pay the bills. Still have 3 more kids I gotta get through school. Willy says he's going to be a dcotor, a pilot and a cowboy. So I have to pay for medical school, buy a plane and a ranch yet. That's a lot of fish. :D

  • Light color on the snappers Jake is holding. We found them in shallow water. Found an old wreck. I can't believe I never went there before. It looks like about a 150 foot freighter crashed on the reef and got busted to pieces....how many years ago. Loaded with very smart fish. It's in shallow water...8 to 20 feet deep or so. I think it would be best to hunt alone or with one person. Just be real quiet and wait for them to come out.
Saw one cobia but Tino missed it. Lot of eagle rays. I got a nice cero. There was a whole school and this was the lead, biggest one. Female with eggs. Love the roe.
I didn't shoot the snappers I'm holding. Tino got one and Jake got one. But Tino is camera shy. I'm not. haha.
I'm deadly with the 9/16 bands. I'm 8 for 9 the last two trips. 6 stone shots. ya man.
