Spearfishing World forum fish records

  • I've looked through all 43 pages of this thread to come to one simple realization............. ............... ............... ............... ............ ............. ........... .................I have a record qualifying fish! :yay:

Striped Bass, 42 lbs on a scale, speared off of Block Island, RI last June. I stoned him, but if you look, you won't see an exit hole. That's because the shaft hit his brain and stopped before the flopper could engage. Not enough penetration from my 90cm Riffe. Their heads are actually really wide; I'll have to find another picture to illustrate.

    Let me reiterate: :yaydance:

  • 45# blue catfish from the Red River OK, and 35lb Flathead catfish from Arkanas lake.

You've got to post some pictures or it doesn't count :D

Edit: nice catfish! I've only seen a few small catfsh in Nevada, but you aren't allowed to spear them. If I saw one the same size as your holding up I'd be tempted to bring along a fishing pole.

  • Just finished flipping through the thread, there are some great fish posted. Esp like CMfish and pirate dave's fish. Many of the others are very impressive, just well outside the realm of possibility for me to catch.

  • Ah yah! Two personal bests shot in less than a week. :laughing3: yah I'm pretty much giving up on c-bass

10 ounce Kelp Rockfish on Monday

12 ounce Kelp Rockfish from today

Edited 2 times, last by spearstuff: Realized these were kelp rockfish and not a grass rockfish. ().

  • Really, Daniel? :laughing3:

:laughing3: I figured no one could beat those records... or rather try to beat these records :D

    Wow Daniel.. wow..:@

Blast it with the Wong or polespear?

Of course I blasted those monsters with my four band 55 hybrid. What else could take down such beasts of the sea?

    Fathomiers shirt??

What are you thinking Davis? :D :rolleyes1:

  • At least you didn't ruin the fillet and shot it the head. I'm surprised it's in one piece with that huge slip tip!!

  • My rockfishing continued today with 2 more personal bests :D :laughing3:
Found the big guy in a hole and the yellow one was just sitting on a rock.

18 ounce kelp rockfish and a 9 ounce black and yellow rockfish

  • Well yesterday I decided to hunt for cabezon, rockfish, and if the planets aligned correctly maybe a lingcod. NorCal is really the place to hunt for all these fish, but there's still a few left down here in SoCal. On this hunt I brought along my JBL 38 special, out for it's first time in the water, and a flashlight to look into the darker holes for some rockfish.

I spent most of the time cruising over the bottom, looking into holes, checking every crevice or crack, always looking for any signs of movement. As I swam on the surface next to this one ledge I hear an explosion of movement right below me. I look down and this monster face bolts straight out towards me, takes a crazy zigzag of a u-turn, and bolts right back into a hole. I couldn't even point my gun fast enough it happened so suddenly, but the sight of it was ridiculous. The head on that thing didn't look like anything I'd ever seen before, so large and fat. I briefly imagined it being a giant monkfish from the east coast, but then I returned to reality and knew it had to be a monster cabezon.

Back to the present, quickly I breathed up and dove straight for that cave with hopes of getting a second shot at him. Shining my light inside the cave all that greeted me was a cloud of sand to block my view. That cab must have made quiet the entrance. I tried to wait for the murky sand to clear but it was no use. I had to return to the surface for air. Back on top I circled the hole, looking for any exits the fish could have retreated from. I couldn't see any, but still the fish could have holed up around a corner inside the hole, completely out of reach. Diving back down I peered inside. The sand had finally settled and at the far end of the cave, only a few feet away, sat the tail end of a very fat cab. Man was I glad to see that! I quickly pointed my gun as close to the head as I could, took the shot, and yanked him right out of the hole. It was the biggest cab I've ever seen and the first one I'd ever taken. Strung him, shot a couple more rockfish, and called it another great day on the water :thumbsup2:

    21 inch
    7.8 lb cabezon

Also got another personal best rockfish. I think it's a grass rockfish, 1.5 pounds, 13 inches.
