  • I found it online although i think the price is a little high at 140 euros .My Dad and i did just buy a powermate generator PM0497000 which works really well [ Used to run a Miller Thunderbolt AC225 up to 140 amps ] it also runs chop saw and lights simultaneously . We do also plan on building a 24kw generator [ buying st generator head and power with car engine ] i have been researching building a generator for over a year and am currently working up the price and parts list . If you have any questions feel free to ask , always looking to share information .

  • Today I decided to plant several mango and palm trees in a lot I have for retirement, is a 6 acres lot near the tropic, so I think I can go sowing some other veggies and fruit trees. Any recommendations?

  • There's a big mango tree on my property. A couple of days ago someone came knocking on my door asking to buy the mangos. I had this happen before and don't want to be bothered. I told him all the mangos are green and not ripening this year, which was true. He said he wants them green. Turned out he sells produce and in this particular case, green mangos to Asia for pickeling, yuck! Anyways his crew cleaned up my tree of the useless big green mangos, which this year were doing nothing but littering my back yard.

I took the opportunity to ask him a few questions about my tree, since he's a pro and said he has many of them. He said my tree is at least 120 years old. He found it hard to believe the mangos weren't ripening. But it's true, I tried everything. Maybe it has to do with the fact there was a double crop this year, and neither crop was good. If this wasn't the case I'd never sell those mangos. They're Valencia mangos and when ripe they're the most delicious thing. I'd rather give them away to friends.

I asked him how long it takes from the time a mango tree is planted for it to bear fruit. He said in about 8 years it will have a little bit of fruit. I think it's totally worth it. But it's also sad to think that you'll never get to see it as big as it can get.

  • Nice story about your mango tree. 120 years is just awesome! Nothing compared with the sense of paradise that a huge mango tree provides full of mango clusters. My definition of paradise.

    Thanks

  • Just thought I would share this website for those of you interested in Aquaponics. Hank mentioned it in an earlier post.

    Backyardliberty.com

Aquaponics is a system that allows one to grow produce and fish utilizing one system that has relatively little maintenance and cost for the DIY enthusiast. I purchased all the plans and related resources for $37.

I am not making any claims about the finished product or results as I have yet to implement any of the information furnished. I will say I received all the information as advertised and what information I have read through, seems to be on the level, very detailed, easy to understand and follow.

Yes, the video is a bit of hype used to sell you the product, but if you can stand the few minutes going through the poor quality narrative, the purchased information on the system is extremely well presented.

  • Just wanted to post a bit of an update on the aquaponics info I received and the research I have been doing

Very good information! Everything is covered. From building the unit, where to get the supplies at the best prices or even fabricate your own. Best fish for your tank by area and climate, beneficial bacteria, fetilizers, PH, ammonia nitrites, nitrates, grow media, plants, etc.

A 275 gallon tank and necessary materials can be converted into a fully operational system with fish and plants for about $350 per unit. You can spend less if you keep your system smaller and fabricate your tanks from cheaper materials. A single unit can be put together in a few hours if you have all the materials and are at least familiar with a few simple tools.

Of course you can also spend a lot more. I have sourced all my materials and will begin this project later this year when I'm home for a while.

I looked for the happy medium of not spending too much, outright, but also not having to upgrade anything later.

One side note; do not expect to put fish in your tanks right away. It takes at least 6 weeks to get the water conditions properly adjusted.

    Well worth the $37:)

  • thanks for bringing up the subject . I've known of hydroponics but never really payed any attention to aquaponics . your post made me research it . i gave up any gardening because we paved the entire yard for the dogs plus the soil round here was hard as rock but aquaponics seems like a viable options . thanks .

  • The biggest reason I looked into it was wanting to be able to grow produce year round. Subsequent reasons were being able to grow indoors to protect crops from the abundant wildlife I have around my house, from insects to 4 legged critters including our own pets as well as the neighbors. We had more problems with our neighbors dogs in our outdoor ground garden, then we did anything else.

I have an 18'x26' metal building erected on a concrete slab where I plan to "set-up shop".

  • Drinking water should be priority one in any emergency situation. You might look into a British Berkefeld gravity filter in lieu of tap filter or distillation. They are not cheap, but I got mine unused off ebay for $80. If a storm displaces you, it's portable and has enough daily capacity for a family. The flouride, chlorine, arsenic, bacteria, cyst, heavy metal reduction is a bonus for everyday use. Unlike distillation, it also leaves minerals in the water as well.

  • Tony, how do you fill the top part of the larger model when using the Berkfeld at home? Do you have to use another container to bring the tap water to it?

Yes another container, we throw a couple pots in when we make the morning coffee.
