Lion Fish sting recovery time.

  • Got a good dose from a full grown Lion Fish at about 12:30pm in of all places my trigger finger and did not get to hot water for another hour(I really don't recommend EVER getting jabbed by one). My question is, does anyone know if I will be able to use my trigger finger to dive tomorrow? It is my last day to dive and just wana know if I have a chance of being water ready.
Hot water helped immensely with pain management FYI. Just don't do hot water and Asprin together.

  • Bummer George. I wish I could give you info. All I know is that everyone says it hurts....real bad. I hope you're well enough to dive tomorrow. Let us know how it goes. Thanks for the info.

  • It's different person to person. I've taken a couple deep hits on the hand before and was back to normal with only residual pain in a days time. All I took was a strong dose of Benedryl and was good to go on every occasion. On the contrary you see pictures of people with snake bite esque reactions. Then again, I've taken a cottonmouth hit as well without any super serious repercussions. Just hope your insides are as vile as mine I guess, good luck.

  • I lost my trigger finger overseas, so I use my middle finger on the same hand. I guess if your trigger finger hurts too bad to bend you could try it that way rather than switch to a different hand.

  • Yesterday after reading George's post I tried just that, as it was going to be my suggestion too. I found it doesn't work. Because support from the middle finger up against the trigger guard, and pressure from the trigger finger against the side of the handle, is what allows you to turn the speargun left, right, up and down. Even with a very light carbon gun it was impossible to do. Granted in the water the gun will not be so heavy, but water resistance will take over where gravity left off. With a very short gun maybe it will work.

    How you feeling George?

  • I'm not sure if this would apply to lion fish but up here we have a lot of different species of rock fish that burn like crazy when you get stuck by their spines. You scrape the mucus from inside the fishes mouth and rub it on the cut and it stops the burning feeling. Doesn't help with swelling though. A comical fisherman told me this and I called BS till I got stuck in the hand while cleaning one and tried it. Now people look at me funny when I say try it it works! At least with rock fish.

  • I've been stung twice by captive fish, soaked the hand in 110degree water straight away. I was able to get back to the whiskey the same night. Another time a girl I know that weighed 105 wet was stung on the hand and passed out.I cleared her airway, ventilated her, gave her some benadryl, before taking her to the hospital where she was given Lion fish anti venom. Yeah it hurts like hell, get better George.

  • It was just a little stiff this morning from slight swelling with no pain :D Turns out after a tough ride to a reef 25 miles offshore and a much tougher ride back the trigger finger was sadly not needed :rolleyes1: No pelagic's which is why I was there, but great fun to be on my own with my dad, first time him seeing me dive.
Did see two Muttons I estimated to be about 30 LB each! But I was at 67 drifting 20 feet over the reef when I spotted them and since I was in the water alone I decided to not push myself... THAT DECISION HURT! But I am here to groan about it ;)
