Bands in my shooting line $%%%$@@@#

  • Fortunately getting a tangle when shooting a fish close like that doesn't lead to the same problems as when a fish is sounding in open water. In a close up tangle like that it makes no difference, I'd still play the fish with the float line like nothing happened. I'd relegate the shooting line tangling with the bands problem to the world of reels.

    What's a chicken line?

Dan It can happen with or without a reel, I think a chicken line is a drag line sometimes with a small eeg or carrot
    shaped float.

  • On my reel guns I only use one wrap of line. It is usally one wrap of 250 to 400 lb mono depending on the structure and fish being hunted. I have tried spectra a few years back with miserable results. This problem has happened on my Riffe Baja, Riffe No Ko Ai, 55 Wong Hybrid, Rabitech 130,Aimrite 125 and Aimrite 140. As you know I shoot a lot of fish and have a lot of comparisons to make an assesment, but I can not figure what it is that causes this to happen. I love hunting with a reel for the convenience, but I am ready to go old school and dump the reels forever unless somebody can tell me how to prevent this from happening.

If you really want to get to the crux of the problem maybe setting up a target and have some one roll video of the shots will help solve the mystery. I tend to think there are probably multiple scenarios that cause the tangles. I do a lot of target shooting in LA. I'll see if I can find someone to work the camera.

  • How often does it happen to you? Lets say out of 50 shots?

Very infrequent. It does seem to happen when you least expect it. It can be very dangerous. I have shot 60 fish in a single day and never had it happen. I don't know:crazy:

  • red tide---I'm glad you started this thread as I have the same entanglement problem a couple of times a day.
    1. I use a RA Vecta reel on all my RA guns. Course the RA is a bottom release gun.
    2. I use 600lb QPower Line straight from the reel, through the RA muzzle eye, 1 or 2 wraps and then straight to the shaft. No mono, no swivel in the line anywhere.

    3. red tide---do you use a SHOOTING LINE BUNGEE? I do not and maybe the answer is a simple as adding a line bungee to eliminate the tangles.

    4. I have had the shooting line tangle in the bands and pull the bands clear off a slit muzzle like the original RA muzzles :@

I am very anxious to get this entanglement problem solved as I have potentionally lose several good fish as the spear came to an abrupt stop 1/2 way to the fish
    Thanks red tide

  • GR,

Have you tried cable? I've been using 1/16" 7x19 cable that is very soft for a while now and can't remember the last tangle. It has it's drawbacks (hard to cut, needs to be changed when kinked, heavy) but with a single wrap it probably won't make too big an impact on your shots.

I have a bunch. Let me know if you want to try some.

  • red tide--I too have had this problem of shooting line/band fouling.
I have had foulings with mono, with QPowerline AND dynema.
I do not know the solution, but I do offer a suggestion==
    1. Video the shooting line/ band fouling.
    2. Then play the video back in slow motion frame by frame.

(ps-starting next month I'll be filming every shot I take, if no one else films the problem sooner)

    Hope this helps

  • that is some damn good news buddy....nice

    i like to spear fish

  • I studied this for a long time on my gun, I need to go to meeting today and tonight. My stuff is on super 8 film that I don't have the rights to. But I will share the info I learned only from my personal gun.
Please give me a few days.
    Cheers,Don

  • All of us Gun Mavens and no quick fix:angry5::D:D:D

Let the fish swim farther way, if the bands bowtie at the muzzel after the tail of the shaft leaves
the last loop of line can hitch around it as it is a timing thing. There a few Utube images of shots out there.
I'll look to night after work. My band go straight up after the shot and out of the way.
    Cheers, Don

  • I'm guessing this problem has to do with the material the shooting line is made of. I've always used 400lb mono and never had this happen even once. I think 400lb mono is too stiff to tangle, the bands/wishbones will push it rather then mix with it.

Could be. I have been using 300 lb lately:toast:
