Bands in my shooting line $%%%$@@@#

  • I'm guessing this problem has to do with the material the shooting line is made of. I've always used 400lb mono and never had this happen even once. I think 400lb mono is too stiff to tangle, the bands/wishbones will push it rather then mix with it.

Mine did it 3 times in a row with 400 lb Jinki. I've seen it happen to guys after a fresh band shorting.

When I went in search of the Black Marlin record in La paz, I shot wire rope and 5 5/8 band on Double
Trouble. I rigged a band retention bridle that I used on my 72'' Negro Modelo gun.
I'll draw up a diagram Thurs after baseball. it stops the wishbones after it leaves the shaft but makes reloading a little more of a hassle. Big Black Marlin are worth it though.

My double has never done it, even on shots 6' of the tip, I remember swimming down and grabbing my buddy
thirty feet down when he wrapped the bands on a tuna shot and would not let go of the gun.:@

  • I now remember him telling me that he kept the line loose on the line release and thats why it happened. My shooting line is tight on the line release.

  • My shooting line is also relatively tight on the line release. But I can't see how it would be a factor. I think the most important thing to analyze why this happens is measure exactly at what point on the line the bands get caught.

  • I was thinking that earlier about how the bands flip when you shoot. Memo's wishbones are super short.

  • Safe to say the foul up occurs when the bands continue over the muzzle and down under the gun. May have something to do with the looseness of the bands in the band slot/holes. I would imagine that if the bands are loose in the hole they're more free to twist and travel under the gun. I prefer individual holes for the bands, because then I can keep them small enough that the bands never change position in the hole, ie. one side doesn't become longer than the other. It may also have the beneficial effect of stopping the bands from rotating over the muzzle and under the gun. However I've used Riffes for a long time and they have one slot for all the bands, and I never had a tangle.

  • The worst case Is with muzzles and metal wish bones that go in to notch's and can hang just as the last foot of shaft leaves the muzzel forming a bow tie shape. I went and picked up some of my film to copy to digital so I can share it with the members here in the future.

  • What causes the shooting line to get tangled in the bands? This only happens once in a while but it can put you in a bad situation quick. I recently lost a $1,000 gun that I had to let go of at 80 feet. #$%^^^:angry5:

What brand of gun was it ?

i watched a video i had of a fouled shot and the thing that really jumped out at me was the word "bowtie" that is exactly what happened in the vid..the shaft is passing the bands and they are cavitating and moving up and down, the shooting line appears to touch the wishbone and then snap- bowtie!

i think it is a matter of friction between the wishbone and shooting line...i would imagine the slicker the surfaces of both, the less this might happen..

Wong Hybrid Rear Handle. I had shot this gun hundreds of times with no fouling. When this foul happened I was fairly close to the 30 lb Permit when I pulled the trigger. The 300 lb mono tied a perfect half hitch around one of the bands and I held on as long as I could before letting go and watching the fish swim away with my favorite gun.:angry5:

Stop the frame @00.25 and 00.51 you can see one band form a bow tie shape and the line loop is very close.
In 00.51 the two bands pointing are not a issue but look at the shape of the lower band, the wish bone has stalled behind the muzzle causing the band to form a bow tie shape. I the image the line clears but if the fish is close and the timing is spot on you can have a hitched power band by the shooting line.
I used to see it more often when guys were shooting Jay R. old 500% Kevlar instead of stiff mono.
    cheers, Don

  • G.R. I can't remember if it's been mentioned in this thread already, if you haven't yet solved the problem of the bands tangling with your shooting line, try shortening your wishbones.

    I will try that.:toast:

  • got to take a look at a possible solution to the band issue at the Kingfisher booth at the blue wild...they have an articulated axle of sorts that is the front muzzle..it allows for the bands to be quite far forward, but most importantly to this discussion, they raise the bands up and out of the way after a shot...seemed like it was at least worth sharing...
