awesome new floatline/bungee

  • I saw this over on SFP and gave James a shout to get a few. there was a small mix up with the order but James sent me a second one gratis to make it right, I found this very classy.

anyways, it is high grade sheathed bungee with a breaking load of 1600 lbs and a working load of 800lb. because it is sheathed it will not degrade from UV exposure which is nice. My only concern is in diving around sharp structure, but perhaps a 10 ft tag line off the gun will be enough. On my calipers it is 9mm thick.

I find it to be a perfect solution to the line discussion, it behaves like a great blend of the two types..easily coils but doesnt tangle..has good buoyancy and about a 2.5:1 stretch by my best estimate

i recommend it based on the minimal testing I have done...I cant imagine it would not help with any pelagic fish as it will add the benefit of a bungee without the weakness or inconvenience.....wish i had it rigged on my mack shot from today

  • Hmm I didn't test it on it's own. I had it clipped to the float and my gun but it stayed on the surface. I agree it is overkill but it is a damn sight better than the tube lines for durability and I imagine the elasticity may help occasionally without any real drawback other than greater cost than the poly line

  • I have no idea...I believe it is a South African product, or at least that they use it there.

I cannot tell you what this product's value is to you, but I can vouch for the quality of it for the price.

I originally requested a few 10 ft lengths and one 25' so I could get the benefit of the elacticity with most of my line being either the tube floatline of the poly line. I would imagine that unless you are going for big pelagics that a short length would be sufficient, i certainly hope so :D

  • FWIW.
I have no personal knowledge as I still use Norprene float lines from 25 to 50'. I made 20 years ago along with the vinyl ones I coped from Terry Maas.

''The boogie board system adresses all these problems. Its a HUGE float, with a cleat system on it. The cleat is the type that is used on yachts. It stops the fish from taking back the shock-cord you've already retreived. We use 10mm or 12mm shock cord, thats the normal type of shock cord that you can buy from any automotive store. Pretty simple set-up, 20-30m (100' max) shock cord, big boogie board float and off you go!!''

Here is a untried source for bungee in bulk , some one could get a 10' sample and pull test it, when my stuff wears out I'll check it out.

  • Is it like the bungee material used in vehicle tie downs?

    yes, but on steriods.

to give you an example my buddy and i each grabbed an end and stretched it out to about twice it's length, we could then lean back against the bungee and it would pull us back with significant force...do not conduct this experiment with friends with weak grips.....just trust me:rolleyes1::laughing3:

  • that is great info Don... I will take my calipers to it tonight and get you all a thickness measurement

If possible, someone should pass by a pep boys to see if they carry any such material

I added a link for bulk, there are many more i would imagine such as Mcmaster Carr.

  • I got one of those yellow bungee few month back, in 20' to put between to floats, that is if I go one day bluewater and a big one just pass by.

  • The key thing here is that it must float. Otherwise it will be hanging and tangling around. Does it floats?

I agree. Sinking bungees suck. :(

Only a couple of these bungee sources float. The source James sent me to before barely floats, ever so slightly. I'm guessing it's the same stuff he's sellling now, but can't be sure.

  • as i said, when i had it rigged between the float and the gun, it wanted to stay on the surface, I was only using a 10 ft length though.

I have always added a small egg float (also called a gill net float) to my float lines to make the back end more bouyant and to have something to grab if it were to be pulled through my hands quickly...I have not put one on this yet, but might if it is needed.

  • you know Dan, I realize you were joking but we should have done some destruction testing on the short piece....

I suspect the five constrictor knots will hold against most anything, but I wonder if they would fail before the actual bungee.

all we need is a force guage and a trailor hitch :D
