Line release or not ?

  • Hello everyone !! :thumbsup2:
I was wondering if a line release is better than if your shaft is
directly attached to the reel. I wanted to use a steel runner anyway but now
i thought that the reel takes too much power in the first few meters of the shaft.
Or doesnt that make any diffrence ?

  • You mean if there's no loose line that is set free by the line release? Sounds like it wouldn't work very well at all. For the shaft to travel well, the reel would have to be set on very low drag, and that would make the line come loose and flop around. Plus if you shot a big fish, the reel would immediately spool out a ton of line and potentially form a birds nest.

Having a different thickness/weight of shooting line affects the shot quality enough as it is, imagine having none of it.

If you are just looking for a simpler way to build the gun, why not just do a Heinrich release?

You could also do a top line release like in this: http://neptonicsystems.com/Reverse-Mech.htm

  • Yes but i have already built the gun and to atach a simple release is not the problem
but i thought the easier the better. Here is my gun http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3215/1003587i.jpg
Im gonna draw a fast plan on paint how i thought about it:D
    here it is http://www.imagebanana.com/view/v026md26/Untitled.jpg :thumbsup2:

Anschlag...do not pass go...;) You can not shoot line from a spooled reel with out wraps if that's what your thinking. Please excuse my frankness if your just not showing that in your drawing.

  • Noo you got the drawing:D
but okay then. Then im just gonna atach a simple line release.
But why shouldnt it work from a spooled reel ?

  • I won't use a runner and I would use a line release. One mono wrap, to be precise.

You can do one with a piece of stainless spoon using it as a clip against the wooden stock.

    Or also something like these:

Good well powered muilti band guns have the shafts leave the gun at 26 meters per second and faster.
The reel will be torn from the gun or the shaft will be returning to your face very fast, but must likely the line wil snap if you are lucky.

  • Aight mate im just gonna grind me such a line release.;)
But why no runner ? I never used one but it seems much easier to me.

''Runner'' = Slide Ring. Even with the hand made hydrodynamic ones I use on my air gun slam and make noise which can scare small fast fish. After many shots they can deform the metal and jam on the shaft tail.

I agree with the guys on this one, less is more.

  • Right all the pneumatic guns have a runner or slide thing and they work just fine.
Im gonna make some shots with an without runner and look if it makes a BIG diffrence or not.:attack1:
Is anybody else maybe using a runner with a normal gun?

  • I think it's presumptuous for you talk about making and selling guns in another thread, and have an avatar that implies you're a gun builder, when it's obvious you know very little about spearguns. What bugs me is that you're dismissive about advice given to you by very experienced guys. I suggest you slow your roll.

  • I aint dissmissive man. And im sorry but dont get me wrong.
Firtst off all i just asked for advice , which im gonna follow and second off all is that i do know very well about spearguns. I just never worked with a "runner" or slide ring. And there were some pictures and videos that just made me think about it like that one right there
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKiwXSn0t-I but then with a reel.
Otherwise i wouldnt had to start this thread.

  • Sorry buddy, but this single questions tells us all about your "knowledge" regarding spearguns...

    your shaft is
directly attached to the reel. I wanted to use a steel runner anyway but now
i thought that the reel takes too much power in the first few meters of the shaft.
Or doesnt that make any diffrence ?

On the other hand, the guy in the video you've just posted seems to know as much as you. :rolleyes1:

No hard feelings here, but you can get much more advise here from very experienced guys (including GREAT gun builders) being a little bit more humble.;)

Good luck with your reel, slider and rope. :)

  • i have shot the same gun ( an AB biller) in my pool with the slide ring, the low profile slide ring, a shaft drilled and tied with mono, and a freeshaft.

they all pierced a target at 1 m, at 2 m the stock slide shaft did not , all the others did, at 3 m neither of the slide ring shafts penetrated. none of them penetrated at 4 m

that is not a strong gun the way it comes rigged and the trigger is not stout enough to power up for real performance.

the slide adds drag on it's own and places the line and a bulky clip in the worst place to add drag and mess up a shot.

  • Hey buddy we will work with you, but take small steps on ideas. In my 30 plus years of gun building I have seen many injury's with guys that didn't stop and think about Physics. We just want you to enjoy the journey and help keep you safer.

Every non spero that sees my guns thinks the shooting line just peels off the reel and the shafts travel 100 ' under water. Enjoy your build and also reminder we have a lot of great gun topics that can be found with the search key if we are not on line.

  • The guy's rig in the video is extremely crude and unsafe. He only has 1.5 wraps including the rope he is holding on to, and with that much rubber, that shaft can travel much further. Just do the tried and true way, don't try and re-invent the wheel here. I'd put a trigger guard on that gun btw...
