Freedive Spearfishing San Evaristo, Baja Mexico [VIDEO]

  • Man that looks like a great time. Apparentlly, Heaven is not that far away. What you guys do with most of the fish? Did they prepare some for you guys?

The captain of the boat would clean a fish for our meal for the night. His wife would cook it. We had ceviche, grouper fish tacos and fish many other ways. His wife was an awesome cook.

  • Harry, I'm sure others are interested to know as well, please give a cost break down for this kind of trip per person including everything. How long was the trip?

How come there are so many fish there? I'm guessing no local spearfishers.

No problem. I rather people ask questions.

It cost me $700 for 4 days of fishing and 5 nights stay and another $225 (probably less) in little things at the airport, restaurants, Jeep rental, Gatorade, tip, stuff at Walmart...ect. That included breakfast and dinner but we never had breakfast.

The plane ride cost $750 but I had miles on my credit card so it was free.

There are a lot of local fisherman but not spearfisherman. They hook and line every day there besides Sundays. A few fish i shot had hooks in their mouth.

  • How did you hook up with Patrick? Is fishing not allowed on Sundays?

  • I loved the trip because it felt like we were someplace that wasn't exploited. We were the third group to the area and we weren't "trigger happy". There were tons of big fish, but few monsters. It took me a little bit to get back to diving as I've not really been able to do much due to my work/life schedule. That's why Harry got all my big fish the first day. The groupers down there were everywhere, but not as big. They didn't really stay in holes like blacks in Miami, they were out kinda like mangroves.

It was really cool to see all the types of fish from Florida, just twice as big. The triggers were so big they had humps on their heads. One trigger fed six hungry fishermen with great ceviche.

  • I forgot to mention the Mahi Kris shot and Jim sliced him up in the boat for sashimi! Next time dont forget the wasabi!!!

  • The is one of the best threads on here, I was smiling the whole time. You are a skilled marksmen with the gun
Harry, nice clean kills. Baja is a speros dream in many places and I love the people and hard working fisherman.

    Cheers, Don

  • This is the same place Fuzz, Nate and I stayed at in 2006. There were a lot of nice places back then. It is still a hot spot, but I feel shy to unveil the location name, cause since some company started getting divers there, is becoming too popular for the local divers liking. It would be better saying "Somewhere in Baja". Is nice that you had a great time here tho. Nice haul

Don, what gives me the creeps is that now people from Sinaloa are getting there to fish. Sport fisherman, no problem, but also we have serious issues with poachers (guateros) From Sonora and Sinaloa, that had already depleated their fishing grounds. I had this discussion before in the mexican forum, cause guateros close with a net and they start shooting fish like´s there is no tomorrow. Gringos are the least of our concerns, cause most of american guys are family, they belong to the tribe. They are respectful at all as is Patrick or Sergio Niño. But is just a matter of time when others discover this hidden treasure. The place is owned by Toto, I am godfather of his elder kid. And the place is the bomb. If any of you guys make it there, get some clothes or some canned food for Toño and his wife, cause the nearest market is 3 hrs ahead on a dangerous off road path.

  • I've only been up there by large live-a-board boat, diving the islands. Used to be a great place for nice clams on the mainland before heading back out to sea.

Really a beautiful & secluded place, thanks for sharing it with us Tonno. :D

Great shooting Harry - every one of your videos makes me yearn for an Abellansub. ;)

  • this is so true...when the shots are at the edge of the gopro's range of focus and he's poking out eyes!!!

i am wondering if I want to save for a mexico trip or an abellan ??

I heard that issue with nets and poachers.

We really didn't shoot that much fish considering how many divers we were. The commercial hook and line fisherman had a days catch that was much more than our 3 day stay. Just to be clear, I am in no way blaming them of how many fish they keep. It's their livelihood, and I would do the same. Spearos who go there will only go for trophies and keep a minimal amount of fish especially since we cant take it home with us.

I was wondering about this...I assumed the same thing but was wondering if you had brought a cheap foodsaver and vacuumed a few fillets could you have gotten them to a post office or air port where some refreezable ice or dry ice could be used?

    i like to spear fish
