Sciatica pain and spearfishing.

  • I'm very sad to say that i've been having back problems for way to many years already, but for the las 3 weeks i've had my sciatic nerve pinched and sometimes i can't even get up. After some researche i found out that walking is good for it and i've been wondering if fishing will help too. I know a bumpy ride on a boat will screw me up , but i'd like to know if anyone here with the same problem can give me and the rest of the comunity any imput on experiences with this situation Psicologically i know spearfishing is the SHIT for it , but it'll be good to know that it'll actually help my body too.

  • The thing about sciatica that sucks is it can be caused by many things. I have spondylolethesis sp and can get bad sc

I find that a few stretches and exercises help a lot. The figure four stretch where you cross the affected leg over the other leg at the knee and gently bring the healthy leg to your chest moving the other leg with it

The other is called a pelvic stabilization. Where you lay on your back and raise your knees so your legs are bent at 90 angle and your feet are still on the ground. Keeping your core and especially the obliques tight, raise one foot two inches and gently set it down, alternate for 60 on each side. Make sure you do not allow your pelvis to move. The purpose of this is to pull your pelvis forward and align it correctly

Generally tight hamstrings will kill you and do will weak lower abs and obliques.

    Anti inflamatories are your friend.

  • Mother ocean will help heal you as long as you do not have to wear a heavy wt belt ( 0ver 10 lbs).
I have let my abs go to shite the last two years and need to get my core back in fighting form to help keep my back pain in check. The posts here have inspired me to get strong again to live a more pain free life.

    Prayers you heal soon pantoja.

  • Try Yoga Sergio. It actually works!

First time I've tried it I was like "what the heck I'm doing here" after the first 10 minutes, but then, I felt so well that i really enjoyed it.

Try it. It is worth every penny.

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • The best treatment in the short term is rest and NSaIDs. If the pain is severe, I swear by epidural steroid injestions.

I've had back issues and even surgery for a herniated disc. I've found the boat ride is rough on it. And the piking to duck dive can irritate it quite a bit.

Have you had an MRI? I could make more specific recommendations if I can see that.

    Let me know.

  • Sucks.

In the absence of a neuroligical deficit, MRI wouldn't necessarily be the first step. Bad news is, that spearfishing may exacerbate your symtoms in the short term. Spinal stenois is stereotypically relieved w/ lumbar flexion. Unfortunately, surface swimming promotes lumbar extension which can bring about flare ups.

Initaially, I'd try a period of self-direct exercises concentrating on your core strength - abs, obliques, paraspinal muscles. If you see a physcian, a medrol dose pack may be helpful. If that fails to result in improvement and epidural is certianly reasonable.

  • i haven't had mri, but when i was 14 i had x rays and i have my last sacro and lumbar discs almost welded together. almost no gel in between. that was 24 years ago. so i guess i have a herniated disc or something.

  • pantoja, that sounds like spondy. i have a n extra vertebra that is fully fused to the one above it, it occurs in about 1 of 100 people.

with good exercise you should be pain free.. do you have insurance? if so, I can recommend a few very good spinal orthopaedists I have seen over the years..a good treatment plan and physical therapy can do wonders.

If you do not have insurance, rest and anti-inflammatories until the pain subsists and then yoga for stretch, strength and balance of muscles

  • as for now i'm walking about 2 hours a day. i'd rather run but it hurts. and when i get home i feel better. later it comes back. but at least im ok for a bit and im not sitting around and gaining weight. i heat up the area with a hair dryer and my wife massages a bit. when i get to cuba i'll take care of it with the cost close to nothing, i dont have insurance , i cancelled it after my last accident because the cost went up to much.

  • Hey bud. Go to Dick's Sporting Goods or Sport's Authority and purchase a foam roller. They're about $20.Do the following drills daily.

#1 – Foam Roll IT Band – Start just below your hip and roll up & down to your mid-(outer) thigh 10-15X, focusing on any tight spots. Then perform 10-15 “rolls” starting at your mid-(outer) thigh and rolling all the way down to the outside of your knee. Again, focus on the tight areas.

#2 – Foam Roll Adductors – Start just below the crease of your hip and roll up & down to your mid (inner) thigh 10-15X, focusing on any tight spots. Then perform 10-15 “rolls” starting at your mid-(inner) thigh and rolling down to the inside of your knee. Again, focus on the tight spots.

    #3 – Glute/Piriformis Myofacial release w/ static stretch

    #4 – Mobility Circuit

    # 5 - Static hip flexor stretch – Perform 3 sets of 10 seconds each leg. Perform all 3 sets on one leg before moving onto the other leg.

  • GREAT POST hardline...thanks for doing the leg work. ha ha ha.....the first video is the same thingm generally as the figure 4 stretch i recommended.

I cannot agree more about a foam roller. I'd also get a tennis ball and a lacrosse ball and use them to roll the area of your butt and upper inner back.

tennis is soft, lacrosse hard, your body will let you know which is needed

Yeah all that stuff is great for all of us...even if we're not in pain. It can help keep our bodies moving properly so we can continue to dive for a long time. =]

So true, many times after the pain laid me out I wished I would have stretched and warmed up after it was too late.
