Frickin' Jake.. spearfishing Belize

  • I'm lucky on the ice. We have a processing plant here for shrimp so I get all the ice I want. I gotta be careful though. Too much ice on the boat and we don't get fish. :D

  • Hank you guys SUCK!! Play hooky and fill your cooler again!!!? Where is the I am dying of envy emoticon? hahahhahahahh As always superb work fellas.

  • Thanks George. I'll tell you....these young guys are making me look bad now. Tino killed it. Even Mo. I swam back to the boat with one hog and my wife (their mom) says, "that's all you got"?
I look in the cooler and "holy shit".....haha.
I had a lot of fun though. I was in the shallow little channel and the fish really gather there. All kinds. Spooky and hard to get close to but man, beautiful. MUst have been 1000 horse eye jacks swarming around me. They were about 5-8 lbs. I didn't shoot any. Small and no one likes to eat them anyway.
I saw a 30 lb black sprint out just as I rounded one little coral mound. Some huge parrot fish. Unreal.

  • I've heard they're now illegal. It's a shame because the midnight blue one is sooooo good eating. But they're rare so good they're protected. The green ones are very common though.

  • Hank I encourage everyone I talk with about spearing to leave the parrots alone as they are so important to the reef ecology but not illegal in any of the islands here although I hear talk of a off season which would be great.

  • Horse eye jacks make VERY good chum. Next time, shoot one, cut it in pieces and see the dog snappers gather around for a feast...

You're loosing your edge old man... :D

Hey, I was in a zone...Zen like....besides the fact that I couldn't have hit my boat that day if I'd shot at it. :D

  • Meanwhile the mere mortals on the boat.....
Jon (Belizespearo on here, next to Jake in pic) is really good too. He gets down there and gets a lot of fish. Lot of practice from working as a commercial spearo with a local guy here.
We got into a nice school of black (mangrove) snappers near the end of the day. Had some muttons in there too. There's a whole 'nuther layer of fish buried in the ice under the ones in the pic.
Rough as hell going out and coming home. We were going to go again today but it's like yesterday.

No. I've never seen a tiger. But we come home normally before sunset. I have to go 16 miles and if it's rough....slowly. I did have a small bull come up yesterday as I pulled that mutton up from the bottom.
That spot always has sharks and we've had to leave after shooting a couple fish many times. But man, it has fish.

That's good not to have to be there when the sun has set, it looks like a spot a big tiger would like to patrol on
stormy overcast days and dusk. Maybe the long line boats slowed down the the big boys years ago?
Looks like a wonderful spot to harvest.

If there are sharks is because there are fish.

Hey Jake! You are doing very well. Congrats! :thumbsup2:

Cute little video Jake took while we were taking a break. This was abput half the fish we ended up getting. Brian, the son of my very good friend in Hawaii, grew up there surfing. But while in the water diving here he got a bit seasick. Weird.
What's up with thees mon"? is how Jorge, my former spearing buddy from Spain who moved to Viet Nam, talked. This was for him. haha.
We had a lot of fun in a really active spot with a lot of smaller, but smart dog snappers. Also a lot of schoolmasters.
We both got a nice one each also.
Spent 6 hours hunting a 10 acre or so patch of reef with lots of spurs and grooves. The top of the reef was about a foot deep with a lot of surge and breaking waves, but in between were grooves about 10-20 feet deep where the fish were hanging out. Got a few holes in my wetsuit from banging around in there.
Shot my bigger snapper just as a big green moray came buy The fish holed up and the moray went in after it. Lot of thrashing around but the fish didn't get mauled at all.
