The slip tip looks bent?

Marco This image gives away the location if any one is familiar with the northern sea of cortez. These fish are not uncommon in this area.
-
That is the spectra line from the shaft to the tip. The tip is still buried inside I had to cut the line in order to land the fish.

Gulf Grouper , Thanksgiving day 2011 , 5' 6" , weight? more than me 75-80 kilos?. Sea of Cortez
Back in the "good old days" (when you could still get jewfish), I had one that was 5'7" and 174# (79 kg). It looks like you're right on the money with your weight estimate. Like you, it was more than me at the time. Of course, now I weigh the same as a 6'2" one my dad got.

Check out this monster lobster I found in Laguna Beach. Biggest bug I've ever seen or grabbed in the water! Weighed in at 12lbs. Almost drowned the first time I saw this bug, couldn't find it the second time, third time was the ticket and I plucked him right out of his hole. I'm just stoked to get him before the MLPA zone. Felt like I caught him just in time since the closures start in less than a month.

I don't know I was thinking of eating it this time. It's in a friend's freezer right now so I could mount it if I wanted. But I'm not feeling that motivated.
-
Cut the meat out of the tail and then mount it.

I don't see any lingcod up yet; 21lbs 8oz. Shot on 1 May 2011.
And a vermilion rockfish; 5lbs 8oz. Shot on 17 September 2011.

Are these a Pacific "variation# of Goliaths?
i dont think so Marco, he said it was a Gulf Grouper. The pacific variation of the Goliath looks just like the atlantic. Only DNA tells them apart
-
Well, you know, different names for the same species is not new.

Hey Marco
It is a "Gulf Grouper" they shape of the gill plates made it easy to ID. These are very similar to broom tails. They don't as big as Golliaths. It was shot in the Sea Of Cortez at 40' All the local spearos tell me I was lucky to find one so shallow.
-
Jolthead porgy, 10.1# and current IUSA record! :thumbsup2:
Got him 12/30/11.
-
Congratulations !
-
Congrats Matt. Was he wily or didn't know what was coming? My experience with large ones like that is that they're almost impossible to shoot.
-
He wanted nothing to do with me. The first time I saw him, he saw me and took off. I didn't chase, hoping he'd stick around. A few minutes later I saw him up against a rock, I was able to drop and hide myself from him to close the distance.

Here's is my big white I'm 6'0" 235 in that picture.
68lbs more or less.
