PV Shark Watch

  • Until yesterday I had not seen a shark in over a month. I had just paddled back out after catching a wave and was sitting on my board. It was not not a Shamu style breech. It happened super fast and if it were not right next to me I would have dismissed it as a dolphin. I saw the head , mouth and teeth for just a split second. Only one other surfer was able to recognize it as a shark. Headed back out right now.

One really doesn't know what one would do in a specific case until he or she was in a position to actually do it. So me with a cup of coffee reading the Sunday paper could eaily say "chance of being bitten are a million or more to one so Sure let's go surfing to same beach again today, shark or no shark".

But in reality might not be so easy actually getting into the water. Just saying. :nono:

  • Epic shark watching this morning. Two GWS in the surf zone. The larger shark hassled a few people out of the water. Bay watch was out on ski's informing surfers that tourniquets are available at the lifeguard towers. It looks like the next two days will also be good. Small swell, good viz and sunshine make it easy to spot them from the surface.

Want to borrow my long spotter rig, but it is set up for a banjo Canon mount.

  • The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a trawler out with a spotter helicopter. They are trying to tag a few sharks. Lots of monsoonal cloud cover this morning with some surface chop. Not the best conditions for spotting.

    Those boys are stoked.haha

A few weeks ago we had an eight footer chase down a cormorant about 15-20 feet from us. The bird got away minus a foot and some tail feathers.

Watch the size of the bite wounds, nice to see some blue sharks in the mix.
I wonder if she would put a hole in my blowup doll boat.;):@

Just a heads up and a good reason not to become complacent around the juvi and tweener sized GWS's.

  • Looks like one of our San Clemente local young ones, but a bite to the ankle could be a bleed out fast.
