I was emailed a pic of a GWS dorsal fin (tagged) breaking the surface out by the R10 working a bait ball. A large GWS was tagged last year off of marine land. Might be the same animal or one of the smaller GWS tagged off of El Porto. Just a heads up.

It looks like we have a new litter of GWS pups here in EL Porto. A 4-5 footer went airborn about 50ft from me this morning. Cold water and not much bait in the surf zone.

Conclusions
Despite the many flaws outlined here, the Chapple et al. [22] estimate of 219 mature and sub-adult white sharks is useful as an index or minimum estimate for the numbers of predominantly male sharks that annually return to two pinniped rookeries in central California; we suspect, however the estimate of 328 (222–433) from the Chao model [40] to be more useful as it accounts for heterogeneity of capture probabilities. Extrapolation from any sub-population abundance estimate to include members of the population outside of the specific sex/age/length distributions or localities without accounting for sampling bias or including population demography may mislead or misinform conservation and management of this important apex predator. Our demographic results suggest that the white shark population abundance required to account for the number of mature and sub-adult sharks sighted by Chapple et al. [22] at the localities they surveyed must be at least an order of magnitude larger than their estimate when all age classes are included and is probably not “far lower” than other apex predators in coastal California or the ENP. Furthermore, there are signs that the California sub-population is at least stable with recent data suggesting increasing numbers of juveniles [68]. Our estimate and these recent observations place doubt on the need for inclusion of white sharks on the national or state endangered species lists and indicate that existing protective measures are likely to be improving the population status and should be maintained. More importantly, the status of the population should be regularly monitored using a variety of techniques, as no single method is likely to provide completely scientifically sound and unbiased results.

Shark Bites Free Diver at Refugio
QuoteThursday Morning Attack Closes Beach Temporarily
By Keith Hamm
Friday, September 2, 2016
An estimated 6- to 8-foot shark bit a free-diving spearfisherman on the foot Thursday morning about 100 yards offshore of Refugio State Beach, according to California State Park Superintendent Eric Hjelstrom. The attack occurred before 9 a.m., while the diver was hunting in the cove and his friend was swimming nearby. “At first he thought it was just his friend pulling his leg,” Hjelstrom said.
The shark reportedly injured the diver’s foot and ripped off his swim fin. The diver then fended off the shark by pushing it away with his speargun, capturing the interaction with a small waterproof camera. Hjelstrom was not able to release details about the diver’s identity but did say his injury was “not life-threatening.” The spearfisherman reportedly swam to the beach and drove himself to the hospital, stopping at the park kiosk on his way out to mention the attack.
The temporary closure of the beach was lifted at noon on Friday, September 2. The campground is fully booked for Labor Day Weekend.
Glad the diver was not more seriously hurt.
Video was on youtube but looks like it was deleted...:confused1:

I doubt that was "shark blood" on the spear.

The hand push of his gun in the video to get that much penetration? All the water to wash off the fresh blood on the tip. The Blood looks baked on from the Sun.
The toe injury, did he lose a fin? I'm glad he is safe and got through it.
but, I might have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night watching Forensic Files. ROFL

I never liked diving there anyway.;)
Need to come to Florida where I can just be with gaters and snakes.Cheers, Don
