Shark attacks and kills girl Runion Island

  • What animal can replace the role of wolves? none. What can replace sharks? Plenty of other smaller sharks.

There is evidence to support this statement.

When I first moved to Hawaii in 1977 people would proudly say, "there hasn't been a fatal shark attack here since Billy Weaver, at the Moku Manus back in 1950 something".

All those years commercial culling of large sharks was being done on a regular basis. But in the 70s that stopped due to environmental awareness etc. By the late 80s shark attacks on surfers was on the rise. I personally have known and met two victims on Kauai. One had his hand bitten off near Princeville and the other, the stepson of a guy I worked with who was an aspiring pro body boarder, had his foot bitten off.

The theory is that many of the 6-8 foot tiger sharks of the 70s grew into 14-18 footers by the late 80s, demonstrating that once left alone, they will come back strong.

  • It wouldn't be the first nor the last species to be displaced by a competing species in the natural world. As far as sharks that are dangerous to man and their place in the ecosystem, I'm confident something will rise to the occasion and assume their role, with no great detriment to natural scheme of things. I don't have an irrational fear of sharks, and have had a clear idea of what they're about for a long time.

I am rereading this now in the light of day and have a better understanding I think of what you were trying to say here (ignoring the comment about smaller sharks as I think that's silly).
Dan you are maybe right about it from this perspective that culling the species that are deemed dangerous to man would be a way to go, and the other less aggressive species to humans would keep the balance BUT academic rational statements on human actions is almost an oxymoron, who would decide what sharks to eradicate and what would it be based on? It will almost certainly be the end decision of politicians no matter what scientific data was presented and made out of feelings rather than data... Already the data of 10 shark attacks a year falls on deaf ears of a highly experienced waterman and logical fella like you who is not motivated by irrational fear.
To compound it sharks as a species are already under pressure due to over harvesting of all their species because of fins, fins are not species specific they want any shark fin.
So I say why wish more damage on a necessary apex predator that already seemed destained for extinction like 90% of our fish stocks due to overharvesting?
More people who go get their own food is needed and less mass commercialization of our marine environment and leave the f...in sharks alone :D

:angry3: off and now less :blahblah2: before I get a :redcard: ... I am glad this discussion is happening:shark4::shark1::sharky::shark2::sparta:

  • Thank,s for your feed back!
In all "underdeveloped" countries of Africa, Central America, Asia... where I have been spearfishing, I observed how local fishermen and spear fishermen do not have any scruples about sharks.
If they have to kill them... they kill them and as well as they kill lobsters or jacks.
The message sent to sharks is simple and clear: a spotted shark is a prey. As a human I see you, I kill you, I eat you! That's it!
Do we have to pass judgment on this?

Pic of a shark speared by a cuban colleague/ friend ( I chose neutral at the action time)...

  • virgili I think any harvesting of any species, done by individuals for food is to be applauded, subsistence or locally commercially sustainably for food ... I object to a culling due to an attack, and I have a problem with any form of mass fishing IE gill nets, long lines, factory fishing boats or other harvesting methods that are destroying our ocean fish species like the shark.
My stance is not a local one it is a world wide one, sharks as a species are under severe pressure due to over harvesting for fins and other reasons.
Many species I wont take due to stupid things like emotions but whoever I dive with knows as long as the harvest is being used I say nothing.

  • Shit, my older daughter is 15 and she´s an avid spearfisher. Those Reunión Island Tigers are good for a trim, I mean those are magestic animals and shit, but so close of the coast they´re totally out of the line.

Tono. I was thinking after I posted that I wasn't entirely clear. There are many many young men and women who have very good judgment at that age. My point was just that I don't assume they have good judgment at that age in general

    i like to spear fish

  • I want to bite this.:rolleyes1:(non-electronic) shark repelling wetsuit - YouTube

Yeah man, that video makes a lot of sense. For sure all the sharks in Florida know all about banded sea snakes. And the white sharks around the world in temperate waters. Sea snakes are so badass....And sharks know that that little pin head with the fangs where wisdom teeth are.......that they're deadly. One bite to the fin.... Dan, when are you going to sell these?

  • You should watch that vid to the end, shocking! The tiger's mindset appears to be, if it smells like food it's gotta be food, so it's going down no matter what. Strange stuff has been found in tiger's stomachs. Funny thing is, he'll probably digest that bait through the steel container, then throw it up. Amazing.

  • Tigers have eaten and swallowed full size cinder blocks and mooring chain in Cooks Bay Moorea.

I didn´t see your comment prior to post this brother. I totally concur with what you said.

  • The brilliance of people never stops surprising me. Wish that father could go down and have a "chat" with the geniuses who were doing that and encouraging sharks feeding inshore.
