I speared with both of them a couple years ago. Both Juan and Ernesto are excelent spearos.
The location is "El Farallon Centinela" in the central coast of Venezuela. As José said, they use 130/135 cm pneumatics with 8 mm shafts. Depth is over 100'.
The technique is called "guataneo". Once in the bottom, you release your weight belt, wich is attached to the gun and the floatline. The one in the surface starts pulling like crazy when he hears the shot. That's only possible with pneumatics. You can't hear band guns from that depth.
Here's a video from a little while ago with both of them. :cool2:

Marco,
How big was the Cuda?
I am guessing 50 pounds.
I killed one last year close to that with a 100 cm pneumatic in bad visibility.
Thanks for sharing

That was a good laugh, thanks Marco.
Thanks for the video Jose, beautiful cubera.

That was a big cubera. 45 lbs? or more? BIG.....and DEEP.....wow. Nice school of them. Were they in a spawning aggregation?
-
The cuda was more than 20 kg if I remember well. Manuel got it
There's a video in my channel called "picua de Manuel".The cubera was 25 kg (more than 50#) and yes, they do "their thing" in that spot. Been there, saw that.

....wow....you're good. I'm going to retire and just grow shrimp now....:D
I've seen some big ones here too. But they're too smart for me.

I think in many areas of the Caribbean must have snapper that size, not only in Venezuela.
