Friend Ren posted this blackout video

This is my friend Ren Chapman from North Carolina and he and his girlfriend are now Performance Freedive instructors and he recently posted this video of a friend of his having a blackout, they were right there to assist him thank God and it is part of there training so he was ok. You will see him at the end of the dive shoot a grouper, swim to grab him, then he slowly starts to swim him up and gets slower and slower until you see him blow out alot of air (first sign of a blackout) then more air a second later, this was a blackout and Ashley was right there to grab him. Be careful always guys and use the buddy system.

  • yeah and he was fidgeting with the grouper in the last moment, not kicking for the surface. Besides that i thought it was a hella cool video and the viz looked nice,, its nice to see a person ignore a hogfish like that too.

  • "Are you saying he blacked out on purpose?"

no no, just saying they are good freedive instructors so they were prepared by always being very close to there dive buddy to assist.

Yeah Dan unfortunately Ren cut it short because he immediately stopped filming and swam to his buddies aid.

To me there was no need to swim to the grouper, just shoot and head for the surface is what I say, he did look far to relaxed to me as well.

x2, look at this video of speargun hunter, Sheri Daye is a diving godess, and I know is probably the edition, but you shoot a fish like that and you don´t cling around the float line, you go for air asap!!

    I'm a Speardiver, not a freediver

  • Black1 will you samba first then black out or just directly blackout or directly samba?

I have seen guy's just lock up and black out with out doing any body moves.I have lost color vision and dropped
the Wt belt I was holding, followed by dropping my gun and shaking. I was alone and don't remember a full black
out. I swam slowly to shore but could not walk to my car for a hour.My legs were toast, I got my gun, fish and belt the next day.

  • Seaweed a samba is a sign that you were very close to a blackout, within inches of one as they say, but, others will simply blackout without any samba at all, I believe it depends on certain factors of the individual really. Each of us are different in what we can handle or not, what are conditioning is, our body chemistry, etc, etc. I have never samba'ed but have seen it happen a few times and it was in a controled envoirment (freedive class) so we were there to protect the person and catch them from placing there face in the water (always protect the airway).

Don Paul glad to know you made it out of that situation my friend, sounds like a very close call indeed.

Dan I will get a hold of Ren and have him join us, he is a great guy.

  • i would of just shot the fish and swam up. with floatline of course/

those reels can be dangerous not only you can tangle yourself and drown, you can also blackout or get hit by a boat easier

  • I think sometimes when people are doing shallow water dives they become a bit too confident thinking "Oh the surface is just right there" and it is a simple dive, not saying this is what the diver in the video was thinking, just that some can feel that way. I believe Ren said that this diver has been diving for 15 years or more and is quite an accomplished diver, you just dont' know when it can happen.

I myself prefer a float line as well for those same reasons Alan, shoot and swim.

  • yeah , he must have been thinking he was in the confort zone just by being shallow . we shouldn't push it too much even when shallow.

  • Or his machoism got the best of him trying to show off for camera and grab the fish. Who knows really?

That's what I was thinking, and that could happen to anybody, I've found myself showing off when I thought someone was watching before, but not to the point of risk. Mainly because I don't strive for that over relaxed state. My near blackout filming the mutton Pantoja shot was a different mindset, I think focusing too much on the target. I think in this diver's case it was mostly allowing oneself to get to that cozy relaxed state, then playing for the camera was the straw that broke the camel's back. 15 years spearfishing.. should know better. On the up side, nice shot on the grouper.

  • to me, the real lesson is to never think you are invincible..not that this was the case here, but no matter how deep the water is, it is deep enough to drown in.

    stay safe spearo siblings
