Coffee and bottom time

  • How much coffee is too much? I drink about 5-6 cups in the morning. I know it does not help my heart rate. Conversely, how about a beer before a dive? One beer. 12oz not a fat 40. Benefits? Risks?

  • 5-6 cups of coffee a day seems like too much. Coffee has zero nutritive value. For this reason it is one of very few products meant for consumption that is not required to have labeling. Of course if you add sugar and milk to it that's another story. All it is in essence is a stimulant. I'd question the necessity of consuming a stimulant on a regular basis. The coffee bean is not something we would naturally have access to and as such I doubt the human metabolic system is designed to make any positive use out of it. Of course if you simply like it then all those consideration are worth shit. Coffee is a huge industry and you are in the majority.

  • Coffee and beer are wet suit warmers in central ca.I dont see a problem with one beer.

  • Dan according to my nutritionist coffee do affect the metabolic system. it helps accelerate the metabolism do to the content of caffeine.Adding stuff in the coffee just add calories... For people trying to loose some weight:rolleyes1:..it can help keep the metabolism high..But 5 cups a day i beleive is high. I drink 1 to 2 cups in the morning and i'm good to go. But the days i dive i dont drink coffee. I just eat a good breakfast that will last me trough the first 4 to 5 hours of the spearfishing day. so i dont know if coffee can change anything on a spearo.

  • im similar to core sub, on school and work days i drink a bit of coffee and/or mountain dew coke whatever just to trudge through, but when diving its water or gatorade. although sometimes i take a half gallon of publix sweet tea. not for the caffeine but jsut casue i think its good as hell.

if i get up and drink jsut coffe or soda before diving it really makes me feel off.

  • well , coffe i don't like so i'll stay with the beer. i have gone fishing completely drunk and it's not good . but still i have drank halve a beer or a full beer and it kind of help relax and i've found myself diving really good with it. the problem is that the effect will go pretty quick . It won't really help for long. now the better way to go is not drink any alcohol . you can get used to it and it's could turn into something different. if you have one why not 2 , then why not three and so on. just get some good sleep and it will help better , save it for later and it'll taste even better.

  • 5-6 cups of coffee in the morning:@:@? Maybe you should try some Cuban coffee, "una colada" would be more than enough to get you going:D.

  • coffee is a stimulant, it will increase your heart rate. it will definetly kill your bottom time/
I remember taking a sudafed once before diving, it is made from Pseudoephedrine. needless to say i should have stayed at home instead.

  • I drink one espresso in the AM unless I'm boat diving offshore, then I don't drink coffee or espresso.
The only time I will have a beer or glass of wine is after my dive day is over. For me diving, boating and booze don't mix.

You’re right, but if I don’t drink my morning coffee, my body doesn’t start up…
I have to admit that I’m addicted to caffeine. I NEED two coffees; one in the morning and another after lunch. Otherwise, I am worthless. It is a compromise…
I don’t drink any alcohol before or during my dives. After it all that you want, but before, nothing!
I can have two glasses of wine the night before going diving, but that´s it.

I had a sinusitis during 2003 Venezuela Nationals, where I competed and had to take two Tylenol Sinus before the competition started and you are right, the bottom time was awful, but at least there was a “bottom time”.

  • here is a reference to using medications like sudafed before diving

nasal spray containing substances like Xylometazoline, Oxymetazoline or Tramazoline and pills containing pseudo-ephedrine (pseudo-ephedrine is related to adrenaline) like Sudafed®.
In spay additives and preservatives like benzalkonium are often used which hurts the cilia which are part of the cilia mucous system which keep your sinuses and ears healthy.
In scuba diving it is advised against diving deeper than 30 meters or using nitrox on Sudafed because it could adversely affect susceptibility to nitrogen narcosis and oxygen poisoning (source: www.duiken.nl). Sudafed should possibly be considered more dangerous in freediving for in freediving it has more negative side effects like decreased bottom time, the heart is under more stress from freediving than from scuba diving and nitrogen-narcosis effects are worst when you descend fast.
If you need decongestants to be able to freedive or have a cold: skip the dive

i also read somwhere that taking decongestant medicines can help with equalization ,but they can cause reverse block which is the opposite of equalization.

  • I drink a giant cup of Cafe Bustello every morning diving or not. On dive days I drink the same but I also take a Claratin D24. I have been doing this for years. I have done it for weeks at a time diving well past 100 feet all day everyday. To each his own I say.
Oh, I almost forgot about the beer advise. Drink lots after every day of diving but never when diving:toast: If beer is not available drink wine or rum:crazy:
