Lost Wax concept gun

  • So Tin Man / Grizwold, am I right in thinking that anyone who won the FRA raffle or auction could be the proud owner of this gun or one like it to their specs?:thumbsup2:

    Yup. :thumbsup2:

I was hoping to have a completed gun to show off before the raffle ends on December 18th. I may not be done by then, but I wanted to at least post some progress pics to get the creative juices flowing in anyone who still hasn't bought their tickets.

  • hey, jeff
how much of a difference is there in setting your handle closer to the shaft then say an inch or more than the setting that you already have on it now.

  • sorry jeff,
how much did it cost you in material for your carbon fiber work in itself . thinking of making a hybrid but trying to get material out here in hawaii is pretty rough.

  • It's hard for me to say, because I just haven't shot as many different guns as most of the guys here. Maybe it's all in my head, but the two guns that I have built with high mount handles seem to kick straight back, with little or no muzzle jump. And one of those two guns is my hybrid, which doesn't really have mass on it's side compared to a heavier gun.

Hopefully Griswold will add his observations. He has far more experience shooting much more powerful guns. But if you look at most of his later creations, they have the high mount handle too.

Edit - Just saw your second post. I added it up, and the carbon fiber sleeves and fabric for this gun totalled about $95. Add in epoxy, brushes, etc. and it's probably more like $120. Still, that's really not bad compared to a similarly sized teak stock.

  • thanks jeff for the info N by the way that is some very beautiful weapons that you are creating i envy your skills. great work. did you have a chance to shoot your hybrid

  • . . . did you have a chance to shoot your hybrid

Only in the pool so far. I wanted to test it on the smaller AJ's on the Gulf wrecks off Pensacola this Fall, but they closed the season unexpectedly not long after I finished the gun. :angry5:

  • well i take that as a blessing cause you're probably be getting more then just A Js with that gun. thanks for all the info.

  • I've made a little progress, and I now have the muzzle done. I plugged the end of the barrel with 2" of epoxy mixed with lots of carbon fiber, and then bored it to accept a round muzzle end. That made it easy for me to machine a good, tight tolerance fit . You can see that I stole a page from Dan and Don Paul's guns with the way that I tapered the rear of the band slot.

  • I see where my post may have been misleading. The round bore for the muzzle does not go all the way through the 2" of epoxy that I poured to seal the end of the barrel. So it is watertight.

  • really nice gun you build there. congratulations..really want to see the end product....hopefully after i come back from my deployment we can get toghether and go test some guns.:rolleyes1:

  • CORE SUB---please keep a tight watch the whole time you are not here. We will all be praying for your safe return brother

Tin Man---I am AGAIN amazed at your craftsmanship. The concept and design of the CF barrel, the perfect design and fit of the muzzle and the quality of the entire gun designed and built by you is something most of us only dream of.
One of your most impressive photos was the barrel cross section showing your CF barrel compared to the size of other non-enclosed track barrels.
IMO your "Lost Wax concept gun" will set the standard for CF gun design and production for a very LONG time.
    Thanks for sharing

  • Tin Man---what spear shaft do you have in mind for this new design gun?
    Riffe euro finned shaft?
As you know the RA notched AND pinned shafts will not work cause of the enclosed track.
    Just lookin ahead :)

  • Tin Man---sorry, I don't understand.

Hau - For this gun, I am using a standard Riffe notch shark fin shaft ;)

I'm sure it is not a notch shaft, but a Riffe finned shaft cause of the enclosed track, but is there 2 different mech shafts from Riffe? Euro and standard?
Do you think the mini fins or the larger shaft fins will be better?
Thank you for helping me understand :)

    A. edit---WAIT, do you mean Riffe standard mech notch shaft with standard [not mini] fins?
